Biodiesel basics

 A biodegradable, combustible fuel made from

vegetable oils and/or animal fats
 Usually done by base‐catalyzed trans‐esterification
of fats/oils (i.e. make a big multi‐chain molecule
into 3 smaller molecules)
 Commercial biodiesel is sold as a “blend” with regular
ultra low sulphur diesel (ULSD) (e.g. B10)

5
Waste cooking oil(WCO)

 Edible oil after cooking/using produces significant amount

of “Free Fatty Acid(FFA)” which can be converted to
biodiesel.

 Can be found anywhere as household cooking, Restaurants,

Food courts, And many more.

Factors considering the Biodiesel
Reaction
 Waste oil type: Bacon grease and other solid greases are not acceptable for
biodiesel production since they raise the cloud point and could cause cold
weather problems.
 Restaurant fryer oils: Tend to be high in free fatty acids which results in lower
yields of biodiesel due to soap production during the reaction.
 High water content in the oil: Water impedes the biodiesel reaction resulting in
only partial conversion of the oil to biodiesel.
 The temperature should be lower than 60˚c

9
Waste disposal & Byproducts

 Waste water from the fuel washing process (approximately 1 gallon of water
for every gallon of biodiesel)
 Glycerine is drained off at the end of the fuel production process
(approximately 1 gallon for every 3 gallons of biodiesel)
 Both the waste water and Glycerine have small amounts of methanol in them.
 Crude glycerine from the biodiesel conversion process has three possible uses:
 Compost accelerator
 Methane booster in anaerobic digesters
 Soap production

Soap from recycled cooking oil
Bangladesh perspective

 Bangladesh is a small developing country with huge population

 We are largely dependent on foreign oil. About 93% fuel are imported.
 About 59.60% of the population has access to electricity which
consume large amount of natural gas.
 We should come with renewable and alternative fuel for sustainable
future.
 Govt. has planned to produce 10% of total energy from renewable
alternative energy sources by 2020.

Bangladesh perspective

15
Conclusion

 Recycling of waste cooking oil

 Making a contribution in diesel consumption
 Reduced toxics emission
 Creating an impact on oil market
