Three-Moment

Equation
CE132P – Theory of Structures 2
Clapeyron’s “Three-Moment” equation
A continuous beam is a statically indeterminate multispan beam on hinged
support. The end spans may be cantilever, may be freely supported or fixed
supported. At least one of the supports of a continuous beam must be able
to develop a reaction along the beam axis.

• A continuous beam is a statically indeterminate structure.

• Beams are made continuous over the supports to increase structural integrity.
Clapeyron’s “Three-Moment” equation

Applicable to:
• Continuous Beam with any number of spans
• Symmetric or non-symmetric

In summary, the form of Three-Moment that is normally used is:

• Summations signs have been added to the terms on the right so that M/EI diagrams for
each type of applied load can be treated separately
• The most common type of loadings are point and uniformly distributed load
