Strumming or plucking?
What is the difference between
strumming and plucking the
guitar?
What is the difference between strumming
and plucking the guitar?
Strumming Plucking
Strumming
• A style in playing the guitar
where you play all the strings
the chord requires.
• Take the G chord. You would
take your guitar pick and run it
quickly over all the strings (that
you are supposed to play) to
make your chord.
Plucking
• A distinct style of playing the
guitar.
• When you pluck a chord you
only pick one, or just a few of
the strings one (or maybe two or
three) at a time.
The difference between the two should be rather clear by now. play all
the strings, or just a few?

Well when you strum it gives you a full, ringing chord, whereas when
you pluck the strings, it gives you a few notes of a chord (or just a few
notes period depending on weather or not you are playing just one
string or more than one).
When you pick a song versus when you
strum it, picking is a little more delicate,
sincere, almost more personal, but
strumming is more clear, loud, and faster.
Metronome
Metronome
• a device used by musicians that marks time at a selected rate by
giving a regular tick.
• One of the areas where guitarists commonly have problems is
rhythm. It is common to see many able-fingered guitar players
struggle with this very important aspect of music.
• Proper practice with a metronome will allow the
guitarist:
– To understand rhythm better and play the guitar in
a more knowledgeable way
– To improve greatly and sound more professional
– To get better work as a guitar player and more fans
Practicing with metronome forces you to
listen carefully and to listen to more than just
yourself. This is an often forgotten, but very
important benefit of using a metronome.
Practicing with a metronome increases your
musical awareness, which will help you
become a better performer.

Things to remember before strumming the guitar:

1. Learn how to count (metronome). One, two, three, four!

2. Do not lock your wrists. Act like you are shrugging an insect of your
hands. Shake it off!
3. Know if all the strings are tuned. Bawal ang yabag!
