Knowing a little about cancer..


We are all told that cancer is serious and fatal, but it can
be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle and cured if
detected at an early stage. It is important to see a
doctor if concerned about certain changes or
signs in your body.

Today’s presentation is an awareness program.


The information provided is to help you understand
what cancer is, as well as, be able to identify the
symptoms related to cancer.
What is cancer?
Our body consists of many tiny cells
which when grouped make up our
organs and tissues of the body. For
instance, our lungs, liver, kidney, skin
are all made of cells. Cancer is a
disease of these cells.

Normally, the cells grow, die and are


renewed. This process works in an
orderly manner. In the case of cancer,
the affected cells get out of control,
continue to multiply and spread to
various parts of the body. This
interferes with the way the body
normally functions.
What are the symptoms?
Some of these symptoms may not be serious. Symptoms
that persist and gets worse, should be checked by a doctor.
There are 200 types of cancer. Each produce a set of
different symptoms.

Can cancer be prevented?
Yes, cancer can be prevented. There are many risk factors; a few
that are controllable. Here are some causes to cancer:
If you smoke, try not to smoke or use tobacco in any form.
Smoking is a well known cause of lung cancer.
Eating a lot of fatty foods may contribute to cancer. Try eating more
vegetables and fruits, and exercise regularly. This will protect you
against cancer.
Being out in the sun for too long can lead to skin cancer. The
ultraviolet rays affect your skin. Get the right cream to protect
your skin.
Heavy consumption of alcohol can lead to cancer. Don’t drink too
much alcohol.
Certain chemical substances at work can cause cancer.
Protect yourself by following the health and safety rules.
Family history. Cancer can be inherited. If you are aware of
this, visit the doctor.
Exposure to environmental pollutants such as pesticides and toxic
waste are likely to lead to cancer.
