History

Peugeot is a major French car brand. Peugeot's roots


go back to bicycle manufacturing at the end of the
19th century. Its headquarters are located in Paris,
avenue de la Grande Armée.

15th Century
Proof of the presence of the Peugeot family in the Montbéliard region in
Vandoncourt. Originally a farming family, the Peugeots also included
artisans, soldiers and cloth weavers in their midst. : Jehan
Pequignot, pronounced Peugeot.

In 1734 marks the beginning of the family’s foray into


industry with thebirth of Jean-Pierre Peugeot.

In 1810,. The family mill at Sous-Crates, owned by


Jean-Frédéric,is converted to a steel foundry,.

Armand Peugeot (1849-1915) leads the


company into motor car production.. His early
meetings with Gottlieb Daimler and Émile
Levassor date back to 1888.

From steam to petrol, from the crank to the


steering wheel, he has the ability to negotiate
and steer Peugeot onto the road to success.

1890 Armand Peugeot quickly abandons steam for petrol and produces the first
Peugeot petrol-powered four-wheel car, the Type 2, fitted with a Daimler
engine, at the Valentigney factory

1891 The Peugeot company name is changed to Les fils de Peugeot frères..

1892 Peugeot produces 29 cars and is the first company to fit
rubber tyres to a petrol- engined four-wheel car. Peugeot's
Type 4 is a unique model, ordered by the Bey of Tunis.

1894 Armand Peugeot diversifies his range and, brings out the
Type 5 (a two-seater), the Type 6 and 7 phaetons, the Type 8
Victoria, the Type 9 and the Type 10 estate

1895 The range is extended by the
addition of the Type 11 (a two-seater)
and the Type 12 (a closed estate).

1897 Armand builds a motor car factory (with a total floor area of 50,000 sq.meters, 4,000 of them
covered) at Audincourt in the Doubs region and another one at Fives-Lille in the north of the country,
all fitted with Peugeot

1898They started as a motorcycle manufacturingcompany

1900 Peugeot's car output reaches 500 units per year. But it also produces 20,000 bicycles..

1901 The Type 36, available as a 3-seater spider convertible or a 4-seater tonneau has a new
single-cylinder vertical engine.

1904 From this year onwards, Armand updates his range every
year and this trend continues almost up to the time of World
War One.

1909 The Lion Peugeot small cars, still driven by the Lion-badged Peugeot team Giuppone
again take the cup for small cars organized by Auto magazine.

1913 In May, Jules Goux wins the Indianapolis 500 in


a Peugeot.

In July, Boillot wins the Amiens Grand Prix in a


Peugeot L56. Output triples between 1911 and 1913.,
representing 50% of French production and 20% of the
French market.

1919 In July, introduction of the new Peugeot 10 hp model (Type
163).

1929 The car known simply as the 201 makes its


appearance at the Paris Show. It is the first car to have an
0 in the middle of its name .

A policy still followed today. Peugeot registers a trademark


based on having 3 digits with a central zero.

1934 peugeot launched 601, a top of the range
six cylinder model. Appearance of the first car
to feature a folding roof.

1933 At the Paris Motor Show in


October, launch of an
aerodynamic shape for the full
Peugeot range. It features shell
headlights, a slightly inclined
radiator grill and low-swooping
wings.

1935 Introduction of the 402 at the Paris Show in October. It
marks a turning-point in the history of the Peugeot brand, which
is ahead of all its competitors in introducing an aerodynamic
body as standard

1941 Introduction of the VLV, an electric car, to meet
the fuel restrictions imposed by the occupying forces. It
is manufactured close to Paris.

1943 During the night of 15 to 16 July, the factories are bombarded by RAF Lancaster planes

1945 The workshops have been destroyed, the factory has been looted and Sochaux now has
only 9,400 workers. Restarting industrial operations proves difficult

1946 Production restarts with the 202, the basic model in the Peugeot range. 14,000 units are
produced in Sochaux in this year.

1947 Establishment of Sedis, a company specialising in the manufacture of transmission systems.

1948 At the Paris Motor Show in
October, Peugeot unveils the 203, its
first totally new postwar car, and
adopts a unique model policy.

1959 Peugeot launches its first


standardised production diesel
car, the 403 with an Indénor
engine. Peugeot cars reach a
major milestone, with two
million cars built.

1965 In April, in an unprecedented
move, Peugeot introduces the 204,
its first front-wheel drive vehiclea

1967 At the Paris Motor Show in


October, Peugeot introduces the smallest
diesel engine in the world, a 1200 cc
model fitted to the 404 estate.

1969 Launch of the 304 and 504 coupé and convertible. Launch of the ZF automatic gearbox
on the 504. Peugeot becomes the second largest French maker of private cars.
1970 Peugeot’s annual production exceeds 500,000 units.
1973 Automobiles Peugeot adopts the form of management and administration of a European
public company, with a supervisory board and executive board. The total number of vehicles
built by Peugeot over the years reaches the figure of 8 million.

1975 Peugeot unveils its top of the range 604
saloon at the Geneva Motor Show in March

1978 PSA Peugeot- Citroën buys the three European subsidiaries of Chrysler Corporation:
Chrysler-France (Simca), Chrysler UK (Sunbeam-Rootes) and Chrysler España. At the
same time as gaining a range of cars and brands , Peugeot acquires industrial sites at Poissy
in France, Ryton in Great Britain and Villaverde in Spain.

1979 In February, Peugeot is the first company to offer a turbo diesel engine on the 604,
the first car of this type to be marketed on the European market

1981Establishment of three new companies for subsidiaries specialising in tools : POE


, Scival and SIFCO .

1982 Launch of the P4 military vehicle, designed for the French Army.
