21st Century Skills
21st Century Skills
The term 21st century skills refers to a
broad set of knowledge, skills, work habits,
and character traits that are believed—by
educators, school reformers, college
professors, employers, and others—to be
critically important to success in today’s
world, particularly in collegiate programs
and contemporary careers and workplaces.
1. Student-centered instruction
• Education is no longer about
listening to the teacher talk and
absorbing the information

• Different learning styles are

encouraged
Student-centered instruction

Engage in many different types of

hands-on activities

Learning is about discovery, not the

memorization of facts.
2. Education should be collaborative

•Work together to discover information,

piece it together, and construct meaning

•Dynamic collaboration
Education should be collaborative
Recognize the different strengths and
talents each person can bring to a
project, and change roles depending on
those attributes

Schools link with other educational

institutions
3. Learning should have context

Teacher still provides guidance as to

the skills that need to be acquired
Application of the learning is emphasized
A need to take a more general approach
and teach them the skills that are useful in
any situation
4. Schools should be integrated with society
Model what a responsible citizen is
Encourage students to join committees
or take part in school projects, and by
occasionally helping the community
around
Education needs to help students take
part in his/her community and society
What are the digital
skills every teacher
should have ?
a) Create, edit, and share digital
audio, video and image content
b) Create digital portfolios
c) use digital assessment tools to create quizzes
d) Create online content using social
bookmarking sites
Use of ICT in Education

Computers can be used to enhance

constructivist approaches in the classroom
by developing programs, computer-
assisted instruction, drills, and tutorials.
Use of ICT in Education
Social networking sites can be
used for forum or group
discussion where a lot of ideas
are being expressed by the
students
Use of ICT in Education

There are also sites in which

students can create their own
portfolio, scrap book, journals and
the like.
Use of ICT in Education
• Integrating ICTs with tools that
support constructivist learning
increases a learner’s ability to
participate in “peer interactions,
group reflection and discussion”
(Santally et al., 2012, p. 8) in a
variety of social-web formats to
support constructivist learning (Tsai,
2008).
Use of ICT in Education

Online social learning environments

designed using constructivist
framework allow students to “present
their views and critically analyze the
views of others” beyond a classroom
context (Gazi, 2009, p. 69).
