AIR POLLUTION

Definition:
• Presence of one or more contaminants in
atmosphere
• Tends to be injurious to human health,animals
and plants
Man Requires:
• Man breathes about 17kg of air
• 1.5 to 2 kg of water
• 0.75 kg of dry food
• Air is mixture of two gases. Nitrogen and Oxygen
• Air is invisible colorless tasteless
• Air is necessary for all living organisms
• Man breathes about 22,000 times a day
• The region of air present around the earth is
atmosphere.
Causes of Air Pollution
• Motor vehicles – main source of pollution
• Automobile emissions are hazardous
• Industries – source of air pollution
• Petroleum refineries – major source of
gaseous pollutants
• Coal based thermal power station produce
pollutants – fly ash
• Human source of air pollution is fire
• Dust and other light particles carried by wind
• Carbon Monoxide is poisonous gas produced
by automobiles, domestic fires
• Carbon Monoxide interferes with blood’s ability
to carry oxygen to the cells of the body
• Hydro-Carbon in the air produced by partially
burnt petroleum, organic wastes, garbage are
pollutants
• Foul air emitted by industries automobiles,
stone crushers reduce visibility
