Current Source Inverter

 A current source inverter converts the input DC current to an AC

current at its output terminals.
 In these inverters, input voltage is maintained constant and the
amplitude of output voltage does not depend on the load.
 However, the waveform of load current as well as its magnitude
depend on the nature of the load impedance
 In this inverter, input current is constant but adjustable.
 The amplitude of output current from CSI independent of the load.
APPLICATION:

 Speed control of ac motors.

 Induction Heating.
 Lagging VAr compensation.
 Synchronous motor statrting.

1. Single Phase CSI With Ideal Switches

 In this,A thyristor is assumed an ideal switch with zero

commutation time.
 The source consists of a voltage source `E`and a large inductace `L`
in series with it.
 The function of high impedance reactor in series with voltage
source is to maintain a constant current at the input terminal s CSI.
 From fig.1 when T1,T2 on.load current io is positive and equal to
I.When T3,T4 are ON,Load current io is negative and equal to –I.
1. Single Phase CSI With Ideal Switches

 The output frequency of io can be varied by controlling of the

frequency of triggering the thhyristor pair T1,T2 and T3,T4.
 CSI may be load or force commutated .
 Load commutation is possible when load power factor is
laeding and
 For lagging pf load, force commutation is essentials.

2. Single-phase capacitor commutated CSI with R Load
 All force-commutated CSIs need capacitors for their commutation.
 Here the term capacitor commutated ia used just to distinguish this
CSI from other CSIs.
 The source of this inverter is a constant but adjustable DC current
source.
 Capacitor C in parallel with the load is used for storing the charge for
force commutating the SCRs.The Thyristors T1-T4 are the four Power
switches.
 The SCRs are gated in pairs; T1,T2 together by gating signals ig1,ig2
and T3,T4 by ig3,ig4 as shown in fig of next slide.

3. Single Phase Auto sequential Commutated
Inverter(ASCI)

 Out of the force commutated Current source inverters, auto sequential

commutated inverter is the most popular .
 In this, A constant current source I feeds the load which is assumed here
an inductance L for simplicity.
 Thyristor pair T1,T2 and T3,T4 are alternatively switched to obtained a
nearly square wave.
 Diodes D1 to D4 are connected in series with each SCRs to prevent the
commutating capaitors from discharging into the load .
 The inverter output frequecy is controlled by adjusting the period T
through the triggering circuits of Thhyristors.
 The operation of this inverter can be explain in two modes as under.
