OBJECTIVES

Comparison between variable refrigerant flow

(VRF) system and package system for university
presidency building .
INTRODUCTION
AIR CONDITIONING is the process of altering the properties of air (primarily temperature and humidity) to
more favorable conditions .

An air conditioning system consists of many mechanical and electrical equipment

assembled together to produce comfort in an enclosed space.

In 1902 the first modern electrical air conditioning unit was invented
by Willis Carrier in Buffalo, New York.

The first air condition ,designed and built in Buffalo by Carrier ,

began working On 17 July 1902(1).
LITERATURE REVIEW

 Variable refrigerant flow (VRF

The Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) is an air-condition system configuration that consists an outdoor
condensing unit and multiple indoor units which is founded in 1982 cooling only type,
in 1990 heat pump, in 1992 heat recovery and year by year till 2013 this system was completely
developed .
these system is a good option for building with multiple zones ,hotels and office building .

 Package unit
The Package is founded in 1958 by (daikin) this system are all-in-one heating and cooling solutions,
with most of the components housed in a single cabinet.
These units are used commonly in places like restaurants, homes , and small halls, etc.

In 2017 the performance of this two systems have been evaluated in simulation environment by using widely-
accepted whole building energy modeling software, EnergyPlus .Each system is placed in 16 different
locations, representing all U.S. climate zones , It was found that the VRF HP models included around 14%–39%
annual HVAC site energy savings potential over the RTU-VAV models in the 16 US
climate locations.

1-Variable refrigerant flow

In a VRF system, multiple indoor fan coil units may be connected to one outdoor unit. The outdoor unit has one
or more compressors that are inverter driven, so their speed can be varied by changing the frequency of the
power supply to the compressor. As the compressor speed changes, so does the amount of refrigerant delivered
by the compressor. Each indoor fan coil unit has its own metering device that is controlled by the indoor unit
itself, or by the outdoor unit. As each indoor unit sends a demand to the outdoor unit, the outdoor unit delivers
the amount of refrigerant needed to meet the individual requirements of each indoor unit(2).

2-Heat Pump systems (most popular) : all the indoor units can either heat or cool (not at
the same time). Fan and Dry modes are available for each indoor unit independently(3).

2- Heat Pump systems (Cooling mode)
2-Packaged System

Rooftop systems combine the economy and simplicity of split system technology
with the flexibility of ducted air distribution. The compressor, evaporator and
condenser units are combined into a fully integrated package which can supply
efficient cooling or heating, all through conventional ducting and air grilles located
throughout the building(4).

1-Packaged System air Conditioners with water Cooled Condensers

In this packaged air conditioners the condenser of the refrigeration system is cooled by the water
The Water is pumped into the unit to cool the refrigerant and the hot water is returned to external cooling
towers, cooled and recirculated . Only the piping connections for the water cycle and the water cooling
system are external.
2-Packaged System air Conditioners with Air Cooled Condensers
In this packaged air conditioners the condenser of the refrigeration system is cooled by the
atmospheric air. The fan located inside this unit sucks the outside air and blows it over the condenser
coil cooling it in the process. The condenser coil is made up of several turns of the copper tubing and it
is finned externally.

Methodology
 literature review

 study site and constarction of building.

 Heating and cooling load calculation by using revit program .

 Selection of VRF and roof top package .

 Design of complete VRF system and duct system.

 Analyzing the result and comparing the current system with suggested one for VRF and
comparing the package results with used VRF .

FUTURE STEPS FOR PROJECT

 select the best type of package system.

 Deliver the conditioned air to the spaces(Design the ducts) and

distribute it.

 Select the best type of (VRF) system.

 Deliver the refrigerant to the indoor unit(design the pipes).
