Exercise No.1 Familiarization with ECDIS Display
Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be familiar with ECDIS equipment
regarding creating route and setting the safety parameters.

No. Requirements
1. Check chart Horizontal Datum and Vertical Datum.
2. Note the type of model vessel and navigation area.
3. Set safety parameters according to your draft and UKC.
4. Create a route with 10 WPs. Give name to all WPs.
5. Set XTD port and starboard for your route to 0.5 NM for your route.
6. Set XTD starboard to 0.3 for legs between WP5 and WP7.
7. Set ship’s turn radius of 0.50 NM for the route.
8. Check the route. Adjust the route before accept. Save the route.
9. Monitor the route. Get out of monitoring route.
10. Go to quick distance calculator and calculate the distance between WP4 and WP9
Exercise No.2 Familiarization with ECDIS Sensors
Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be familiar with ECDIS sensors.

No. Requirements
1. Place a North Cardinal buoy to 2 NM right ahead of your vessel.
2. Draw a square starting exactly 0.5 NM of your portside.
3. What is set as your primary positioning source?
4. What is set as your secondary positioning source?
5. Set for your alarm for ARPA to CPA 2 NM.
6. What sensor do you have active for the STW?
7. Set the ship’s Time to UTC + 2 hrs.
8. What is your main sensor for the Heading?
9. Change the primary source of positioning to DR.
10. Use the manually fix position to determine the ship’s position with Bearing and Distance.
Exercise No.3 Route schedule
Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be familiar with planning and scheduling
the voyage on ECDIS.

No. Requirements
1. Create a route with 10 WPs. Give name. Check route. Save.
2. Go to schedule calculation.
3. Insert the speed of 12 Knots for all WPs and set the ETD (date and time).
4. Select tide surface and press calculate. Give name to the schedule.
5. What is your ETA (date and time) at WP 10?
6. In WP 4 you have to stay for 30 min. Insert it in your schedule. Then re-calculate the ETA .
7. Let’s consider that we have to reach the destination in 10 days at 4.30 PM. Calculate the ETD
8. Calculate the ETD for the situation the vessel is steering with 20 Knots.
9. At WP 3 make a stop of 1 hour. Re-calculate the ETD.
10. Set the ETD and ETA. What speed should be kept?
Exercise No.4 Safety functions
Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be familiar with the settings intended to
assure safety of navigation.

No. Requirements
1. From Chart set the appearance in two / four shades.
2. What format/type of chart is the actual loaded chart? Set the base/standard display view.
3. Make the scale bar visible. Do the same with gridlines.
4. Make all depths up to 25 m to be displayed on the chart.
5. Make chart boundaries visible / invisible.
6. Set chart autoload to be permanently to OFF. What does it mean? Set back to ON.
7. Activate the function SCAMIN. What is the purpose of this function?
8. Display the national names on your chart instead of International names.
9. Set shallow contur to 10m, safety depth and safety contur to 20m and deep contur to 25.
10. Activate the CATZOC function. Explain the purpose of this function.
Exercise No.5 Add info
Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be familiar with creating layers of info for
the ECDIS.
No. Requirements
1. Activate user Chart A by pressing ON. Draw a square with an anchor-sign within it. All sides
should be approx. 2 M. Write the name of your ship inside the square.
2. Save the add-info made under the name “Layer 1”.
3. Add a new object including the text “WRECK” and add a danger depth of 8 m. Move the
object approx. 0.5 M west from its original position. Save the changes into the current layer.
4. Unload the layer. So far you have worked in User Chart A. Now activate the User Chart B.
5. Load “Layer 1” in user Chart A.
6. Activate User Chart B. Add an object (any object).Save the layer as “Layer 2”.
7. Make sure that both User Charts are activated and press Merge. Enter “Layer 3” in the Save box.
8. How many Layers do you have?
9. Activate user Chart A. Load available the Layers. Unload them.
10. Activate user Chart B. Load available the Layers.
Exercise No.6 Route planning
Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be familiar with planning the route using
the tools available in ECDIS.
No. Requirements
1. Create route 1 with 5 waypoints. Give name to route 1 and WPs. Place the WP3 to 3 nautical
miles N from the actual position (1st route).
2. Create a second route (2nd route) with 4 waypoints. Give them name.
3. Link the two routes. Give name and save the new route (3rd route).
4. Reverse the new route. Shift the route.
5. Check the route. Monitor it.
6. Set the ship’s radius to 0.5 NM and XTD to 0.5 port and starboard side.
7. Make visible the distances and directions.
8. Set the XTD portside to 0.4 NM between WP2 and WP3. Set appropriate Safety frame.
9. Align ship’s body by heading/COG.
10. Display ship by contour / symbol. Make the wind card visible.
Exercise No.7 Manual chart corrections
Objective By completing the tasks the trainees will be able to apply manual corrections to
the ECDIS.
No. Requirements
1. Insert at 1 NM right ahead of your vessel an Isolated danger buoy.
2. Insert a wreak symbol 2 NM north of your vessel.
3. Move both inserted dangers 0.5 NM toward west from the original positions.
4. Insert a West cardinal Buoy with attachment “caution” at 0.8 NM on your starboard beam.
5. Draw a square in full red colour with 0.5 NM each side, starting 2 NM on your port beam.
6. Place an anchor inside. Make the depth to appear next to the anchor sign.
