PRESENTATION ON SMART SENSORS

PRESENTED BY
CHARU KOHLI
INTRODUCTION
 Sensors are devices that respond to physical
stimulus heat, light etc and convert that into an
electrical signal whereas smart sensor along with
the above activity does more interactive send this
sensed quantity to controller/processor for further
action.
 It consists of sensing element, signal conditioning
electronic and controller/ processor that supports
some intelligence in a single package Flow chart of smart sensor
 Smart sensors are identified as having decision
making and communication present in a single
system.
WHY SMART SENSORS?

Smart sensors enhances the following applications which makes it smart:

1) Self Calibration
2) Communication
3) Computation
4) Multisensing
5) Cost effective
TECHNOLOGIES INVOLVED IN WORKING OF
SMART SENSORS

Micro electro mechanical system (MEMS)

 This system helps the sensor to work in a smarter way, by allowing them to handle huge amount of data
in just a fraction of second
 Such type of technology makes the sensors more adaptable and enhances its self calibration abilities
Very Large Scale Integration Technology(VLSI)
 It is the process of miniaturization of computer chips and implanting an emphatically large number of
transistors on a single silicon semiconductor wafer.
 This technology offer several advantages such as reducing the size of circuits and the cost of devices,
less power consumption, while occupying a relatively smaller area.
APPLICATIONS
 Industrial Applications
 Traffic monitoing and controlling
 Precision agriculture and animal
tracking
 Environmental monitoring
 Flood and water level monitoring system
 Transport
SMART SENSORS FULFILLING
THE PROMISE OF THE IOT
WHAT IS IOT?
 The Internet of Things (IoT) is all about making the
life simpler and more exciting for consumers by
interconnecting the world around them.
 It is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home
appliances and other items embedded with
electronics, software, sensors etc. which enables
these things to connect and exchange data.
 Sensors are one key factors in IoT success.
WHAT DOES IOT EXPECT OF ITS SENSORS?
 Low cost
 Physically small
 Wireless
 Very low power
 Self calibrating
 Data pre processing
 Robust
 Multisensing
The solution to above mentioned all the expectation is “Smart sensors”.
In the world of IoT smart sensors form the backbone of the interface between the
users and the multitude of devices that surround us, such as smartphones, robots
etc.
The bottom layer of the IoT system consists of sensor connectivity.

HOME AUTOMATION SMART SENSORS
 Building a smart home starts with smart home automation sensors which take control of lights and
appliances so we can customize how and when to control devices around home.
 Sensors required for building a smart home are as follows:
1. Motion Sensor
2. Temperature Sensor
3. Light Sensor
4. Humidity Sensor
5. Vibration Sensor
6. UV Sensor
7. Accelerometers
8. Infrared Sensor
SMART SENSORS IN CITIES
 Smart sensor in cities could help save lives, cut traffic and slash
crime.
 It advocates the installation of network of sensors that take constant
reading of variables such as traffic flow, energy consumption, air
quality etc.
Countries where smart sensors are in use:
 Satander, the Spanish city is embedded with more than 12,000
sensors that measure everything from amount of trash in containers,
to the number of parking spaces available, to the size of crowds.
 In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s second largest city to monitor everything
from water levels in streets after a rainstorm to developing traffic
jams.
 The cities in Singapore is manages with smart sensors that manages
everything from elderly relatives in care homes to car parking.
SMART SENSORS- KEY TO PRECISION
AGRICULTURE

 Precision agriculture allows farmers to maximize yields using

minimal resources such as water, fertilizer and seeds.
 By using smart sensors farmers can begin to understand their crops
at micro scale, conserve resources and reduce impacts on the
environment.
 Sensors used in precision agriculture are as follows:
Optical sensors
Airflow sensors
Dielectric soil moisture sensors
SMART SENSORS CAN HELP PEOPLE WITH
DEMENTIA

 Dementia patients are especially prone to wandering or getting lost.

 The data that sensors collect can be instantly analyzed using
algorithms to detect and report signs of problems to caregivers and
others before they become serious. In other words, these sensors
allow caregivers to keep tabs on their loved one from afar.
 Some smart sensors can even identify the progression of dementia by
identifying patterns of use and movement. Once a behavior pattern is
learned, any behavior out of the ordinary could then be detected,
investigated and reported on. For example, a smart coffee maker
could alert caregivers if a loved one deviates from their regular
coffee-making routine, (e.g., they forget to use the coffee filter).
FACTS
ADVANTAGES DISADVANATAGES

 Minimum interconnecting cables  Predefined embedded function have to be given

during the design of smart sensor.
 Reduces the load on central control system
 High Reliability
 High Performance
