CASE STUDY
MENDOZA, EDRIAN D.
MOC11
PROBLEM:
Errors in quantity estimate is a common mistake in computation.
For example (Actual work Scenario)
A Multi-Purpose Building has an estimated construction price of 3,959,936.29.

ITEM NO. DESCRIPTION TOTAL COST

PART A OFFICES AND LABORATORY FOR THE ENGINEER
103,236.24
PART B OTHER GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
107,023.30
PART C EARTHWORKS
66,864.32
PART D PLAIN AND REINFORCED CONCRETE WORK
1,583,776.87
PART E FINISHING AND OTHER CIVIL WORKS
1,877,780.25
PART F ELECTRICAL
221,255.31
  GRAND TOTAL
3,959,936.29
If the engineer make an error in estimation of
quantity of materials in Part E, revision should be
done. Therefore the price under Part E will change.
Let’s say the total value of error is 2389.00 pesos.

ITEM NO. DESCRIPTION TOTAL COST

PART A OFFICES AND LABORATORY FOR THE ENGINEER
103,236.24
PART B OTHER GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
107,023.30
PART C EARTHWORKS
66,864.32
PART D PLAIN AND REINFORCED CONCRETE WORK
1,583,776.87
PART E FINISHING AND OTHER CIVIL WORKS
1,877,780.25
PART F ELECTRICAL
221,255.31
  GRAND TOTAL
3,959,936.29
Once the total cost of the project has been advertised online for
bidding it cannot be change. Therefor adjustment in other parts
should be done in order to come-up with the old value.

ITEM NO. DESCRIPTION TOTAL COST

PART A OFFICES AND LABORATORY FOR THE ENGINEER
103,236.24
PART B OTHER GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
107,023.30
PART C EARTHWORKS
66,864.32
PART D PLAIN AND REINFORCED CONCRETE WORK
1,583,776.87 Previous Value
PART E FINISHING AND OTHER CIVIL WORKS 1,877,780.25
1,875,391.25
PART F ELECTRICAL
221,255.31
  GRAND TOTAL
3,957,547.29
In this case, adjustment in other item’s quantity (usually items with lump sum as
their out put) on part B should be done in order to arrive with the previous value
total value.

Current Value Previous Value

3,957,547.29 3,959,936.29
Let’s take item Mobilization/Demobilization as an example.
Equipment: Stake truck
To compute for the value:
Hourly Rate = 783 php/hr
Previous Value of Item = 15267.47
No. of Hours = X
( Hourly rate )( No. of hours ) = Previous Value + Amount of error in Estimate
Substitute:
( 783 )( X ) = 15267.47 + 2389.0
Simplify:
f(x) =-783X + 17656.47
Using Bisection Method:
Using False-Position Method:
Conclusion

From the sample problem presented we can say that

bisection method will be more appropriate approach
to solve this problem. It can be observed that the
bisection method can iterate 0.0002% while the
false position is limited to 0.1888%.
