 Initial Awareness
 Religious beliefs- bias against this population based on my
religious beliefs.
 Empathy
 Understanding their willingness to stay strong and be
themselves. Being aware of their life struggle and
acceptance of who they are.
 Interactions
 My interactions with this population has grown because I
have experienced more of people apart of the LGBTQ
community due to the diversity of UNCP.
 I roomed with someone who considered themselves a
“Dyke” and I had to look past them as a person, and get to
know their personality.

 In 2016, a gay parade was held in Orlando and resulted in a mass shooting (left 49 dead and 50 injured).
 First gay rights in 1965 in Philadelphia.
 1970’s gay liberation movement was started
DISCRIMINATION

 Schools- education discrimination


 Being bullied (verbal and physical), physical abuse,
 Family discrimination
 Not being claimed by their family, mistreatment from family, non
acceptance, physical torture
 Employment discrimination
 Denial of jobs because of sexual orientation, complaints,
mistreatment, not given the same opportunities of heterosexuals
 Legal (law) discrimination
 Cross-dressing laws were in place, discrimination laws against
same-sex marriages (in some states), bathroom law
HEALTH DISPARITIES

 HIV/AIDS
 Gay Black men are the most effected by HIV/AIDS
 67% of black gay or bisexual men are diagnosed with
HIV/AIDS
 Infections, health issues, diseases are more
susceptible due to the weakened immune systems
RELATIONSHIP PROTOCOLS

 Services are typically denied for LGBT students. Heterosexuals are


usually who services focus on.
PRACTICING CULTURAL COMPETENCE

 Personalization: Understanding the challenges of the


 Empathy client, and being able to help them and provide them
 I would have to understand why people of the LGBT with the necessary resources. As for myself I can more
