The purpose of this study is to investigate the

impacts social media and academic

performance of the students in Grade 10- BH
Barga. The research study aims to answer the
following questions;

1.) To what extent, does the social media affects

the Grade 10- BH Barga’s Academic
Performance?

2.) How has the use of social media influence the

academic performance of the Grade 10- BH
Barga?
The findings of this study and earlier ones
showed some noteworthy results. The first
independent variable influencing the academic
performance of students, that is, social media
participation was negatively related with the
Grade 10- BH Barga students’ outcome, while
the other independent variables were positively
related with students’ outcome. The results of
this study suggest that teachers should come up
with an idea on how their students can
maximize the benefits of Social media, that
school management should incorporate rules
and regulations on the use of the social media in
the school.
Based on the gathered data the following
are the conclusions;
Social Media have negative effects on
Grade 10- BH Barga’s Academic
Performance
Social Media have positive effects on
Grade 10- BH Barga’s Academic
Performance
The usage of Social Media to the Grade
10- BH Barga have influenced their
academic performances.
The result from the findings of this study showed
that, though Social media have negative effects on
teenagers such as lack of privacy, distracting
students from their academic work, taking most
of their productive time, and such like, they also
have benefits and can be used appropriately. For
instance, students can form online communities
in order to plan for a project, have group
discussions about class material, or use the Social
networking sites (SNS) as a way to keep in
contact when a student who has been absent
needs to be updated on current academic
information.
In the light of the findings of this study, the
following recommendations are made:
Students should be educated on the
influence of Social media on their academic
performance.
Students should be monitored by teachers
and parents on how they use these sites.
Teachers should ensure they use the social
media as a tool to improve the academic
performance of students in schools.
Students should better manage their
study time in and prevent distractions
that can be provided by the social media.
There should be a decrease in the number
of time spent by students when surfing
the net.
Social Networking Sites should be
expanded and new pages should be
created to enhance academic activities
and avoid setbacks in the students’
academic performance.
The students should create a balance
between chit-chatting and academic
activities. More attention should be
directed to research.
The use of Social media network by
students should focus on the academic
relevance of those sites instead of using
them for negative purposes.

Background of the Study
Social media are the collective of online
communications channels dedicated to
community-based input, interaction, content-
sharing and collaboration. Social means
human society, as interference of people and
the groups, and the word media is the
medium of expressions. Most of the forms of
social media are not digital. It generates a
large number of innovations and Social Media
is one of the biggest inventions of technology,
which is now most popular and widely used.
Zahid, A. (2016) emphasizes that Social
Media are “Technologies that made social
communication easy and enable
discussions among its participants”. While
in my study, the word social media means
a web-based mobile application that allows
people or companies to make, interact with,
and share new user-generated or current
material, in digital environment. Students
are consumers and producers of media.
Thanks to the Internet and social web
including Facebook, twitter, blogs,
Smart phones, and text messaging,
most students increasingly live in a
world where information is access to
communication technologies. For
example, in 2010 as reports shows
Filipino teenagers about 73% of them
use social networking sites, and 65%
have a cell phone.
Rowlan’s et al., (2008) stated that
students are not always have
Media literacy skills that can help
them to effectively analyze,
understand, And evaluate new
forms of information and make
smart decisions about its Quality
and uses.
Statement of the Problem
Making new friends, staying connected and satisfaction
of social needs are the primary reasons why people
consider using social networking. The modern world
has turned into a small global village where the
connection between individuals is simplified through
the networks that are internet generated. The social
media network has illuminated the lives of people by
sharing of knowledge worldwide making turning them
into global citizens. The impact of social media on
youth especially the students has been more evident as
compared to the elderly above the age of 35 years.
Students can now communicate and share thoughts
through the various social media websites platforms
such as Facebook in real time regardless of the
geographical locations or distance.
Simon, P. (2003) stated that the invention of
smart phone has increase the usage of social
media. It enable users to access multiple social
networking sites through just few clicks. These
social Medias has a great impact on students
on which large number of researches has been
conducted and each research shows unique
results. Some studies prove that social media
negatively affect the performance of students
while according to some researches it
improves the learning of its users and improve
their communications skill.
Significance of the study
The importance of this study is to know the
impacts of Social Media of Grade 10- BH
Barga Student’s Academic Performance.
This study will serve as the Review of
Related Literature of Iligan City National
High School–Tambacan Annex students in
their research paper. It is also a big
challenge for those students who want to
make this study more significant and
accurate. The ICNHS-Tambacan Annex will
benefit this research that I’ve conducted.
Objectives of the Study
This Research study aims; (1) to investigate the
impact and relationship between social Media and
performance of Grade 10- BH Barga, (2) to resolve
the misunderstandings and confusions of people
about the use of social media, and (3) to know
how has the use of social media influence the
academic of Grade 10- BH Barga.
This study aims to answer the following questions:
1.) To what extent, does the social media affects the
Grade 10- BH Barga’s Academic Performance?
2.) How has the use of social media influence the
academic performance of the Grade 10- BH Barga?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study limits only in Grade 10 – BH
Barga. The researcher wants to know the
impacts of Social Media to Grade 10- BH
Barga Student’s Academic Performance
only and not the other topics that are not
related to the research problem.

This study will be conducted in Grade

Achievements
This chapter provides an overview
of previous research on knowledge
sharing and intranets. It introduces
the framework for the quantitative
study that comprises the main
focus of the research described in
this research study.
Concept of social media
Kietzmannn, A. (2012) said that Social media is a
means that employs mobile and web based technology
to create highly interactive platforms via which
individuals and community share, co-create, discuss
and modifies user-generated content. Social media is a
phrase being tossed around a lot. It is a website that
does not just give you information but interact with
you while giving you information. It is a group of
internet based application that allows the creation and
exchange of users generated content. It is easy to
confuse social media with social news because we
often refer to members of the news as the media.
Adding to it, that social news site is also social media
site. Some media website includes:
Social Bookmarking: interact by tagging
website and searching through website book
marked by others (Blink list, simple).
Social News: interact by voting for articles and
commenting on them (Digg, propello).
Social Networking: interact by adding friends,
commenting on photo and profiles, sharing
groups for discussions (Facebook, 2go, BB chat)
Social Photo and Video Sharing: interact by
sharing photos or videos and commenting on
the user submission. (Youtube and Fliki).
Wikis: interact by adding articles and editing
existing articles. (Wikipedia, wikia).
Social media refers to the means of interaction
among people in which they create, share,
exchange and comment among themselves in
different networks. Andreas and Michael (2010)
are of the opinion that social media is a group of
internet based application that builds on the
ideological foundation and allows the creation
and exchange of users – generated content.
Social media has become one of the major
channel of chatting through platforms such as
2go, BB chat, blogger and wikia. There has been
an increase in the mobile social media which has
created new opportunity for browsing.
Facebook and Academic Performance
According to Richard, G. (2014) he stated that
the transition in behavior has led the youth to
explore new patterns of information and
perform multitasking. Though, this
multitasking has to affect the time utility and
distribution in both positive and negative
ways. One significant effect of these channels
is on the student’s academic performance and
several empirical studies have reported that
the excessive unproductive time spent on
social networking sites have affect the
students grades.
Impact of Social Networking Sites usage
on Students Academic Achievements
Tufecki, (2008) conducted a preliminary analysis
of the “Effects of Facebook usage”. The research
model used for this study tests the perceived
affect of self regulation, trust and personality
traits on student achievements. The research
model suggests the negative mediating affects of
the Social Networking Sites such as Facebook,
Twitter and Skype etc. The concluding remarks
are that, a decrease occurs in the student’s
academic performance but a positive effect on
the satisfaction with life.
This study intends to find out the the
impacts of Social Media to Grade 10- BH
Barga Student’s Academic Performance.

Introduction
The following phases and paragraph in this
chapter talks about the design, methods used,
and the procedure in figuring out or shaping
the results or outcome of this study. This
chapter will tackle the research design,
sampling method, data gathering methods,
subjects/respondents of the study, sampling
technique and the procedure of data
gathering.
Research Methodology
The researcher collected the needed data through the
use of questionnaire. A total of 44 copies of the
questionnaire were distributed to elicit responses
from the students and retrieved on the spot by the
researcher. A total of 4 copies were missing while 6
were wrongly filled leaving the researcher with
34 valid questionnaires. The data gathering of this
research is through collecting data, information and
written documents, with the help of computer,
books, and for those authors who has a related topic
about the impacts of social media towards student’s
academic performance.
Subjects/ Respondents of the Study

In this study the researcher got 79.07%

subjects in Grade- 10 BH Barga. In this
research study also the researcher made used
of the purposive sampling. The selected ones
were the respondents of the said study.
Sampling Technique
The researchers used a purposive Sampling
Technique to develop the sample of the research
under discussion. (Freedman, et al., 2007) detailed that
this method, which belongs to the category of non-
probability sampling techniques, sample members are
selected on the basis of their knowledge, relationships
and expertise regarding a research subject. In the
current study, the phenomenon under investigation,
sufficient and relevant who experienced the usage of
social media affecting their academic performance
inside the classroom. Within this context, the
participants of this research study were the Grade 10
section BH Barga.
Research Instruments
A well-constructed and self-developed questionnaire
titled “The Effects of Social Media to Grade 10- BH
Barga’s Academic Performance” was used to get the
desired information from the students. The
questionnaire was divided into two sections (A and
B). Section A was for collection of information on
personal data of respondents while Section B
consisted of questions that elicited responses from
the respondents with response options: Strongly
Agree (SA), Agree (A), Disagree (D) and Strongly
Disagree (SD).

CHAPTER 5
SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND
RECOMMENDATIONS

The following chapter concludes this report.

A summary of the research is presented, and
findings of the study are discussed and
interpreted. The significance of this research in
was examined. Recommendations for further
research end the chapter.
5.1 Summary

This study investigated social media and academic performance of the students in Grade
10- BH Barga. The research study aims to answer the following questions;

1.) To what extent, does the social media affects the Grade 10- BH Barga’s Academic
Performance?

2.) How has the use of social media influence the academic performance of the Grade 10-
BH Barga?

This study wants to know the impact of Social Media to Grade 10- BH Barga’s Academic
Performance. The literature review was concentrated on the effects of social media,
specifically in their academic performances. This research study used a purposive
sampling technique having an interview data gathering. A sample of 34 respomdents was
selected from a population of 43 students.

The research was undertaken on October 9, 2017 in ICNHS-Tambacan Annex with the
help of the respondents of Grade 10- BH Barga. The instrument was validated and found
to be reliable. It was personally administered by the researcher. The intention was to
gathered data that are related to the topic questions, topic problem and to the conceptual
framework of this study.

Moreover, the researcher analyzed and interpreted after the all the data needed was
gathered.
5.2 Conclusions

Based on the gathered data the following are the conclusions;

Social Media have negative effects on Grade 10- BH Barga’s Academic Performance
Social Media have positive effects on Grade 10- BH Barga’s Academic Performance
The usage of Social Media to the Grade 10- BH Barga have influenced their academic
performances.
The result from the findings of this study showed that, though
Social media have negative effects on teenagers such as lack of privacy, distracting
students from their academic work, taking most of their productive time, and such
like, they also have benefits and can be used appropriately. For instance, students
can form online communities in order to plan for a project, have group discussions
about class material, or use the Social networking sites (SNS) as a way to keep in
contact when a student who has been absent needs to be updated on current
academic information.
The findings of this study and earlier ones showed some
noteworthy results. The first independent variable influencing the
academic performance of students, that is, social media participation
was negatively related with the Grade 10- BH Barga students’ outcome,
while the other independent variables were positively related with
students’ outcome. The results of this study suggest that teachers
should come up with an idea on how their students can maximize the
benefits of Social media, that school management should incorporate
rules and regulations on the use of the social media in the school.
5.3 Recommendations
In the light of the findings of this study, the following recommendations
are made:

• Students should be educated on the influence of Social media on their

academic performance.
• Students should be monitored by teachers and parents on how they use these
sites.
• Teachers should ensure they use the social media as a tool to improve the
academic performance of students in schools.
• Students should better manage their study time in and prevent distractions
that can be provided by the social media. There should be a decrease in the
number of time spent by students when surfing the net.
• Social Networking Sites should be expanded and new pages should be created
to enhance academic activities and avoid setbacks in the students’ academic
performance.
• The students should create a balance between chit-chatting and academic
activities. More attention should be directed to research.
• The use of Social media network by students should focus on the academic
relevance of those sites instead of using them for negative purposes.
