ORTHODONTICS
ORAL HYGIENE DURING YOUR ORTHODONTIC
TREATMENT
• Maintaining excellent oral hygiene standards during Orthodontic treatment
is SO IMPORTANT.
• Ensuring that the patient is cleaning his/her teeth regularly and correctly as
well as following a diet that is good for his/her teeth and Braces is crucial.
• Developing and maintaining these best behaviours from the outset of the
treatment will really help to ensure a great result in the quickest time
possible.
• Poor oral hygiene, poor diet and poor maintenance of Braces during the
Treatment may result in decay and/or stained teeth and can slow the
treatment down.
Cut food into small pieces and chew on the back teeth.
Avoid hard foods – raw carrot, apples, meat off the bone, nuts, ice etc…
Avoid chewy foods – sticky sweets, caramel, toffee, cakes & biscuits, etc…
Avoid sugary foods – these cause decay (especially fizzy soft drinks!)
Caries and decalcification spots are due to the action of bacteria in the
dental plaque that accumulates on the tooth surfaces.
It is recommend to have regular dental visits and cleanings during the
orthodontic treatment.
EXAMPLES OF POOR ORAL HGIENE
• The white spots, also called demineralization, are the decalcified areas of
the teeth where plaque builds up for long periods of time.
• Demineralization forms when acids from plaque attack the tooth surface,
leaving small holes in the enamel and changing the way it reflects light,
hence the chalky appearance.
What causes white spots?
• Inadequate brushing and flossing cause white spots.
• The bacteria in plaque produce acid that dissolves the minerals on your
teeth.
• Because braces house so many nooks and crannies that can trap food and
plaque, brace-wearers need a little more effort to keep their teeth clean.
• Poor oral hygiene will leave plaque on your teeth, eventually causing white
spots and gum disease.
