PRACTICE
* Description: Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. Oil on
Canvas, Painted in June 1889, it depicts the view from
the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-
Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition
of an idealized village.
* Analysis of Form: It seems that van Gogh is
contrasting life and death with luminous stars and a
gloomy, peaceful village. The main light sources are
the bright stars and crescent moon.
* Cultural Context: Painted by German Impressionist
Painter. With each passing year, it seems as though The
Starry Night is reaching more and more fans and
inspiring new generations of artists.
* Meaning: the artist’s emotional state at the time of
painting. It is one of his night series.
* Objective Judgement: Starry Night shows the vast
power of nature and the church spire and cypress tree -
representing man and nature - both point to the heavens.
