There were two main equations used to analyze
the Heat Exchanger. They were :
Q=Cp(ΔT)
Where :
Q= Heat Exchanger
Cp= Heat Capacity
ΔT= Change of Temperature
The other primary equation was follows :
Q=UA(LMTD)
Where:
Q= Heat exchange
U= Overall heat transfer coefficient
A= Surface Area for the heat to be exchanged
LMTD= Log mean temperature difference
Where LMTD is:

ϴmax−ϴmin
LMTD= ϴmax
𝑙𝑛
ϴmin
For parallel flow : ϴmax = T – T , ϴmin= T – T

For counter flow : : ϴmax = T – T , ϴmin= T – T

PROBLEM #1
A turbo charged, 16 cylinder, vee type diesel
engine has an air consumption of 3000 kg/hr per
cylinder at rated load and speed. This air is drawn in
thru filter by a centrifugal compressor direct connected
to the exhaust gas turbine. The temperature of the air
from the compressor is 145 ̊C and a counter flow air
cooler reduces the air temperature to 45 ̊C before goes
to the engine suction header. Cooling water enter air
cooler at 30 ̊C and leaves at 38 ̊C. Calculate :
1. Logarithmic mean temperature difference
2. Arithmetic mean temperature difference
Given: T = 145 ̊C , T = 45 ̊C
hin hout

T =38 ̊C , T =30 ̊C
cin cout

Solution:
ϴmax = T – T = 145 ̊C- 38 ̊C= 107 ̊C
hin cin

ϴmin= T – T = 45 ̊C -30 ̊C =15 ̊C

Problem #2
A counter-flow double pipe heat
exchanger is to heat water from 20 ̊C to 80 ̊C at
a flow rate of 1.2 kg/s. The warmer fluid is
geothermal water available at 160 ̊C and a flow
rate 2 kg/s. The inner tube is thin-walled with a
diameterof 1.5 cm. if the over all heat transfer
coefficient is 640 W/m²- ̊C and the heat
transfer is 4000 W. Find the required heat
exchanger length.
Given:
Q= 4000W, U=640 W/m². ̊C
T = 160 ̊C , T = 125 ̊C
hin hout

T =20 ̊C , T =80 ̊C
cin cout

Solution:
ϴmax = T – T = 160 ̊C- 20 ̊C= 140 ̊C
hin cin

ϴmin= , T – T = 125 ̊C -80 ̊C =45 ̊C
