Climate change and its impact to

the world
• Human activies can change the balance
between the energy absorbed by Earth and
the one emitted in the form of infrared
radiation.
• Such activities increase the concentration of
greenhouse gases which may tend to warm
the atmosphere and in some areas, cool the
atmosphere.
• Policymakers are faced with risks in the face
of scientific uncertainties and delaying action
will further increase the magnitude of
disaster brought by climate change.
UNFCCC
• Negotiations to develop the treaty
started in 1991.
• June 1992 : The convention was
opened for signature during the
“Earth Summit” in Rio de Janeiro.
• March 1994 : It entered into force
and followed by ratification of 50
countries.
OBJECTIVE
1. To stabilize greenhouse gas
concentrations in the atmosphere at a
level that would prevent dangerous
anthropogenic interference with the
climate system. Such a level should be
achieved within a time frame sufficient
to allow ecosystems to adapt naturally
to climate change, ensure that food
production is not threatened and allow
economic development to proceed in a
sustainable manner.
FOCUS
• Mitigation
• Adaptation
• Oversight
COMMITMENT
• All parties are accounted on the
common but differentiated
responsibilities. All actions to
promote and conserve the
environment are taken into
account and must employ
methods to minimize its adverse
effects on economy, public health
and the environment.
Conference of the Parties(article 7)
• The supreme body that will
regularly review the
implementation and consider any
related legal instruments that
may promote the effective
implementation of the Convention.
Paris agreement
• An agreement within UNFCCC to deal
with greenhouse gas emissions and
requires all countries to take action to
reduce the emission of greenhouse
gases and address climate change.
• Includes a transparency system that
requires every country to report their
greenhouse gas inventories and
subject the same to a multilateral
examination.
RATIONALE OF ADAPTATION OF
UNFCCC
• Climate change is a common
threat to both the world and
mankind.
• Climate change is an irreversible
threat that requires cooperation
and effective international
response to reduce the effect of
greenhouse gas emission.
CHALLENGE OF
IMPLEMENTATION
• Mankind cannot keep with the
pace of nature.
• Emissions of greenhouse gasses
differ in other parts of the world.
• The demand for food increases
and at the same time, conserving
nature is another problem.
• Political influences hinder such
implementation.
OPPORTUNITIES
• By 2030, green economy can
produce an estimate of 24 million
jobs globally if the policies are
implemented right.
• Limiting the rise of global
temperature will result in sufficient
job creation.
• Transitioning into a “circular
economy” will maximize
technological advantage and reduce
waste disposal.
POSSIBLE IMPACT IN THE
PHILIPPINES
• With the right policies and good
investment, the adaptation
efforts, as well as mitigation
processes of poverty and the like,
will help the country meet the
clean environment it needs and
adapt into a green economy.
