SLIP FORMWORK

PRESENTED BY : AKASH M
TOPIC : SLIP FORMWORK
GUIDE : PROF.SHASHI REKHA
INTRODUCTION

• The technique was in use by the early 20th century for building
silos and grain elevators.
• In case of vertical constructions like chimneys and silos, using
slip-forming , concrete is continuously placed , compacted and
formwork is pulled up by hydraulic jacks , giving reaction
against main reinforcements.
• Vertical slipform relies on the quick-setting properties of
concrete requiring a balance between early strength gain and
workability.
INTRODUCTION

• Slip form construction, or continuously formed construction, is a

construction method in which concrete is poured into a
continuously moving form.
• Basically, this method involves the continuous placing of
concrete in a shallow mould having the same plan as the
building to be constructed.
CONCEPT BEHIND SLIP FORMWORK

• Slip form construction is a method for building large towers or

bridges from concrete. The name refers to the moving form the
concrete is poured into, which moves along the project as the
previously poured concrete hardens behind it. The technique has
also been applied to road construction.
• The technique is generally adopted for tall structures like
chimneys and silos. It is also adopted for pavement construction
COMPONENTS OF SLIP FORMWORK

• Slip Form
• Ribs
• Yokes
• Working platform
or Deck
• Suspended
scaffolding
• Lifting jacks
TYPES OF SLIP FORMWORK

1. VERTICAL SLIP FORMING.

2. HORIZONTAL SLIP FORMING.

3. TAPERED SLIP FORMING.

VERTICAL SLIP FORMING
VERTICAL SLIP FORMING

• In vertical slip forming, the concrete form may be surrounded

by a platform on which workers stand, placing steel reinforcing
rods into the concrete and ensuring a smooth pour.
• Together, the concrete form and working platform are raised by
means of hydraulic jacks. Generally, the slip-form rises at a rate
which permits the concrete to harden by the time it emerges
from the bottom of the form.
HORIZONTAL SLIP FORMING
HORIZONTAL SLIP FORMING

• Slip form methods of construction can also be adapted to

horizontal structures and are used for paving , canals , and
tunneling.
• In horizontal slip forming for pavement and traffic
separation walls, concrete is cast, vibrated, worked,
and settled in place while the form itself slowly moves
ahead.
• The technique is more in use for structures that have
continuous walls like silos , chimneys, and piers for very tall
bridges.
TAPERED SLIP FORMING
TAPERED SLIP FORMING

• Slip-forming is also used in the construction of conical

chimneys, cooling towers, piers and other tall concrete
structures involving constant or changing thicknesses in
walls, diameters and/or shapes.
• A form is used with sections which overlap so that one
gradually slides over the other. This is commonly done in
chimney construction but it is not satisfactory for
architectural concrete because the lap shows.
• While the tapered slip-forming process requires greater
attention, contractor experience and expertise ensures the
success of such projects.
CASE STUDY

A.P.C. Herington company

project (USA) was chosen as a
case study in current seminar. It
included Raw Meal Silos and
towers with 6000-ton cement
production per day. All silos and
towers of the cement factory were
constructed using a slip-form
lifting system. The silo was
designed to store raw material.
COMPARISION OF SLIP FORMWORK OVER
CONVENTIONAL FORWORK

 Construction of joints is eliminated. Hence , for structures which

must be watertight the slipform construction is most desirable
 The construction work can be carried out easily
 There is considerable saving in cost of forms as there is less wastage
of forms and they can be used several times.
 Slip form systems require a small but skilled workforce on site
when compared to conventional formwork.
COMPARISION OF SLIP FORMWORK OVER
CONVENTIONAL FORWORK

• The reduction in the movement of formwork and workers also

leads to far more safe working conditions that also make it a
major advantage.
• Reduced cranage as forms are lifted by hydraulic jacks.
• Reduced labor cost, as the system provides intensive work
environment.
• A uniformity of wall sections and layouts can be achieved with
the slip form method.
• Reduces the scaffoldings and temporary platforms as the slio
form system contain it’s own platform to work.
COMPARISION OF SLIP FORMWORK OVER
CONVENTIONAL FORWORK

Time consumption:
• Example
Lift shaft/stairwell with openings
Height: 40 metres
Wall length: 60 metres
Total area: 4800 m2
A normal timeframe for sliding casting – installation,
operation, dismantling – will be around 30 days.
Completing the same construction with climbing casting
would take around 70 days.
COMPARISION OF SLIP FORMWORK OVER
CONVENTIONAL FORWORK

Economical consideration:
• This type of form works only economical when the height
of the structure is a minimum of 16m high.
• The thickness of the wall should be a minimum 15cm.
• This system is only suitable for a structure like silo, cooling
towers, chimneys, tall building and piers.
PRECAUTIONS AND LIMITATIONS

Precaution:
• Concrete is continuously protected against loss of moisture and
rapid temperature changes for 7 days.
• Unhardened concrete is protected from rain and flowing water
• Prevent plastic shrinkage
• Plastic cracks are filled by injection of epoxy resin.
Limitation:
• Not to be constructed large span slab.
• Need very skillfull labour.
• Initial Construction cost is very high.

CONCLUSION
From foundation to rooftop of even the very tallest projects, with the
system’s hydraulic jacks, installing steel reinforcement and pouring
concrete become much easier and faster, plus can be more efficiently
controlled to assure the highest quality finished cement structure.

SLIPFORM technology virtually eliminates unnecessary waste and

hazards, making this construction system even more efficient and
economical.
