Background of the Study
O Energy drinks have been widely known beverage around the world.
This beverages contain high stimulant ingredients such as caffeine,
sugar and vitamins it has the capability to enhance and mental
alertness and physical performances.

O Energy drinks are used as a

sports drink which are used to
replace water and electrolytes during
or after physical activity.

O Energy drinks we see today have different flavors

and colors because of artificial flavoring and artificial
dyes.
Background of the Study
O Food producers often use synthetics foods dyes rather
than natural because it way cheaper. Food dyes are not only
found in food but also in cosmetic and other products.
O Artificial food dyes are used to make foods are
appealing to the eyes.
O Tartrazine also known as FD&C yellow #5 or E102 is one of
the artificial food colorings that is most used.
O The synthetic yellow azo dye derived from coal
tar has been banned from serval countries such as
Austria and Norway because of serious side effects
such as causing lethal asthma attacks and nettle
rash, hives, DNA damage, tumors of the thyroid
and ADHD.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
1. What is the concentration of tartrazine found in the top
three leading brands of energy drinks consumed by High
School Student Athlete of FSUU?

2. Is there a significant difference among the tartrazine concentrations

in the top 3 leading brand of energy drinks?

3. Do the concentrations of tartrazine in top 3 leading

brands of energy drinks conform to the standards set by the
FDA & JEFCA.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
O This study would give information to government agencies such as Food
and Drug Administration and Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives. It
helps them to be aware who keeps on drinking energy drinks that contains
tartrazine.

O To future researchers, this study can provide a background

information about tartrazine and they can also use our study as their
reference for their research.
SCOPE AND LIMITATION
O This study is limited only on the concentration of tartrazine
found in Energy Drinks which will be conducted in Father
Saturnino Urios University. This study focuses only on the
analysis of tartrazine since this food additive can be accumulated
by the said invertebrate.

O This study will focus in Father Saturnino Urios

University, Libertad, Butuan City.
METHODOLOGY
LOCALE AND SUBJECT OF THE STUDY
O This study will be conducted in Father Saturnino Urios
University Morelos Campus where Energy Drinks consumed by
the Student-Athletes of FSUU. The campus of Father Saturnino
Urios University is located at Libertad, Butuan City.
O This study will focus more on the concentration found in
tartrazine. The researchers will collect 2 samples in each
energy drinks (Gatorade, cobra & sting) to know and
determine if there is signifant difference among these three.
The abundance of energy drinks that will be collected will be
considered as the vital part of our study.
SAMPLE
PROCEDURES
COLLECTION ON ENERGY DRINKS

O The energy drink samples will be randomly collected within the

area of Butuan City, Agusan Del Norte. There will be three energy
drinks which is the gatorade, cobra and sting to be prepared which
will indicate to determine if there is significant difference among
these three (3) top leading brands. The researchers will credit the three
brands in which will be purchase on the selected store in Butuan
City. Each energy drinks samples will have different volumes. The
samples will be taken to MSU-IIT to test the concentration.
PREPARATION OF SAMPLES
O The tartrazine of top three energy drinks will be find in the collected
bottles, after that they will remove or take the samples in a small bottle for the
test and will transport it or bring it to the testing center or laboratory which
will be in Iligan City.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS
O The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) is use to determine whether
there are any statistically significant differences between the means of two
or more independent groups. This compares the mean concentration of
tartrazine in the top 3 leading brands of energy drinks.
