Product Bacground
The product that I create is a special study desk which is called
Healthy Study Desk. Today, everyone’s activities are increasing both
parents and children. Difficult subject matter and heavy work
sometimes make us forget to do another activities when we are already
sitting and working in our desk, even sometimes for drinking we forget
or lazy to do it.

Reported by REPLUBIKA.CO.ID, Jakarta-- Indonesia chilren still lack

of drinking water. Based on research in 13 countries which published in
the European Journal of Nutrition, the current reality is that 1 of 4
children in Indonesia is still lacking in drinking. As much as 30 percent
is consumed not a mineral water.
Product Explanation
Based on the case above, the importance of drinking water is the
main purpose of creating this product. This product is called
Healthy Study Desk because this study desk is integreted with
baterry – powered water dispenser on the desk where the water
galoon is keeped in the special shelf inside the study desk. With
this condition, people will remember to drink and easily get their
water since they only need to put their glass under the faucet and
turn on the dispenser, then a glass of water is ready to drink.
Design of Healthy Study Desk
Material Selection
Healthy Study Desk uses four kinds of
material to create 1 product, which are;
Mahogany wood
Acasia wood
Aluminum
Stainless steel
Material Characteristic
 Mahogany Wood
Mahogany wood grows on many places in the world. The mahogany we
use is Toona Sureni, which is native to Indonesia. The mahogany tree
can grow up to 50 meter tall. The stems in Indonesia usually have a
diameter of max 60cm. Mahogany is originally colored red. Since this
color is not desirable the wood is mostly finished in a darker color. I
choosed mahogany as the material for this product beacuse :
 High Strength
 Hard wearing
 Easy to carve
 Attractive grain
Material Characteristic
 Acaica Wood
Acacia wood comes from the Acacia tree, of which there are more than a
thousand worldwide. The type of Acacia used for furniture in Indonesia
is Acacia Mangium. The wood is hard and strong by itself, but tends to bend a
lot in the drying process. The grain is slightly similar to teak, but the color is
different. Acacia can be used for different kind of furniture. It has to be
dried very well in order to prevent the bending in finished furniture products.
I choosed Acaicia wood as the material for this product beacuse :
 Acicia can be compare with teak wood or exotic wood but in cheap price
 Resistant to insect and molds
 High strength and hardness
Aluminum
 Aluminum is a light and corrosion resistant metal, and to take advantage
of these qualities, it is heavily utilized for stamped and cast furniture,
especially in the category of molded chairs. Aluminum atoms form an
outer layer of Aluminum Oxide, which prevents the internal aluminum
from being corroded. Advantages of using aluminum ;

 Light But High Strength

 Corrosion Resistance

 Non magnetic and non toxic

 Easy to be manufactured
Stainless Steel
 Food Grade Stainless Steel 316

Stainless Steel is used very extensively for most modern interior furnishings
involving metal. Many hinges, slides, supports and body pieces are composed of
Stainless. It has a high tensile strength, allowing it to be applied using hollow
tubes, reducing weight and increasing user accessibility. For the battery-
powered water dispenser, I will use food grade stainless steel because :

 Prevent contamination and maintain freshness of the water

 Preventing any growth of dirt and bacteria

 Not easy to crack nor pit

 High corrosion resistance

Manufacturing of the Product
(For Wood Material)
1. Material preparation

2. Wood cutting in required size

3. Size inspection and rubbing

4. Seasoning ( providing chemical protection )

5. Making of join and connected part

6. First impaction ( repair and treaming )

7. Coloring and protective coating

8. Assembly

9. Final inspection
Material Preparation
Before we are going to make our product,
we need to do make sure that the
materials are fulfill the standard
Wood Cutting Process
This process is very important process, because
once the cutting is not in accurate size and not
catch up the tolerance number, the product will
become an NG (Not Good) product
Size Inspection & Rubbing
Sometimes, the result of the cutting process is not
catching up with the tolerance number and we can know
that by the size inspection to make sure all parts are
fulfill the requirement. To overcome that situation, we
can effort it by rubbing process to decrease the size
and make the surface of the wood become smoother
Wood Seasoning
Wood seasoning is the process of removing the moisture
which is present in the wood in its green state. This
process have some purposes, which are; to reduce risk
of fungal and insect attack, to reduce weight, to avoid
seasoning defects, to make wood more secure and
proper and the wood is fit for painting and polishing
Making of Joints and Connected Part

After we are done with the big part of our

product, we are going to make the joint and
connected parts which are need more detail
because of the smaller size. This is why the
appropriate size is very important, because we
have to make sure that the all joints is well
connected
First Inspection
Before going to the painting and coating process, we
need to do first impaction to make sure all parts is
ready to be assembled. If there is a part which has a
problem with the size, as long as it can be repaired, we
will do repairing process by trimming or other method.
However, if the part is cannot be repaired, it will be
replaced with another part
Coloring & Protective Coating
Coloring and Protective Coating is used to gives wood
surfaces desirable characteristics, including enhanced
appearance and increased resistance to moisture and
other environmental agents. This process can also make
wood easier to clean and keep it sanitized, sealing pores
that can be breeding grounds for bacteria
Assembly
Assembly process is to assemble all parts that we have
made and prepared before to become a complete
product. Since Healthy Study Desk is furniture which is
using wood and aluminum as the main material, so the
assembly process is done by assembling the wood parts
and aluminum parts
Final Inspection
Final inspection is the final process of making a
product. In final inspection, we need to recheck
all parts and all joints to make sure the product
is not a failed product and ready to be sold in
the market
Manufacturing of the Product
(For Stainless Steel and aluminum Material)

 Material Preparation

 Cutting Process

 Drilling Process

 Welding Brocess
Material Preparation
Before we are going to make our product, we
need to do make sure that the materials are
fulfilling the standard. The metal used for
Healthy Study Desk is aluminum
Cutting Process
To cut the aluminum, we can use wood-cutting saw with carbide-
tipped blades. In order to prevent sparks and slippage, we need to
apply cutting lubricant for aluminum (WD 40). For better result of
cutting, we have to reduce the diameter of cutting blade, for
example; if we use a 25 cm saw, we can reduce the blade to 18 cm.
For the safety, don’t ever use our hand to hold the aluminum, we
need to use clamp. With clamp, we also prevent the wrong cutting
size which makes the aluminum part become NG. For the cutting
method, we can feed the aluminum through the blade, or the blade
through the aluminum.
Drilling Process
As we know that aluminum is an easy material to be machined and
no need any very special treatment on the process. We can use
High Speed Steel drill bits to make a hole on aluminum. For safety,
do not forget to use eye protector. The first thing we need to do
before start the drilling process is make a dimple on the surface of
the aluminum. After that we need to apply lubricant on the drilling
bit as well and then we can start with a small hole first. However,
do not forget to clamp the aluminum first to prevent stitches.
After we already done with a small hole, we can “deburr” the hole
to make a larger hole and make sure that we are all the drilling
process at a slow speed.
Welding Process
Most aluminum alloys can be joined by welding together; however,
certain aircraft grade aluminum and other special alloys are un-
weld able using conventional methods. Aluminum is commonly welded
with gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and gas tungsten arc welding
(GTAW). Due to aluminum's oxide layer, a positive polarity is
needed break up the surface to ensure a proper weld. Alternating
current (AC) is also used to allow the benefits of a negative
polarity which provides penetration and enough positive polarity for
a containment free weld
