DEFINATION
• An analyzer is an instrument or device which conduct chemical analysis (or similar) on
samples o sample stream.
• Analyzer – auto analyser
• Allows a sample stream to flow from the process equipment into an analyzer,
sometimes conditioning the sample stream in between such as reducing pressure or
changing the sample temperature.
HOW ITS WORK?
• The measuring of oxygen content in an atmosphere is
important, particularly when entering enclosed spaces. Also
inert gas systems use exhaust gases which must be monitored
to ensure that their oxygen content is below 5%. One type of
instrument used to measure oxygen content utilises the fact
that oxygen is attracted by a magnetic field, that is, it is
paramagnetic.

• A measuring cell uses a dumb-bell shaped wire which rotates in

a magnetic field. The presence of oxygen will affect the
magnetic field and cause rotation of the dumb-bell. The current
required to align the dumb-bell is a measure of the oxygen
concentration in the cell.
• The probe at the tap-off point has an
integral filter to remove dust. The gas
then passes through a separator, a
three-way valve and a flow valve. The
gas sample, after further separation
and filtering, passes to the measuring
cell and part of it is bypassed.

• The flow valve is used to obtain the

correct flow through the measuring
cell and a meter provides the reading
of oxygen content. The three-way
valve permits the introduction of a
zeroing gas (nitrogen) and a span gas
(air). The span gas gives a 21%

reading as a calibration check.
HOW TO CALIBRATION
• The calibration procedure requires cal gases with known oxygen
concentration to determine cal factors for the analyzer (slope
and intercept).

1. Connect the high cal gas to the inlet and flow the cal gas at 50
to 250 ml/min.

2. Press the FLOW key to read flow. Adjust gas flow if needed.

3. Press the CAL key twice to display CAL xxx where xxx is the
high calibration set point.
Ensure that the high cal set point matches the calibration gas
oxygen concentration; adjust the set point if necessary .
4. The upper oxygen display will show the oxygen
measurement for the high cal gas.

5. Allow the reading to stabilize then press the SET key. An

automatic calibration will be initiated. The message display
will briefly show HI CAL. As soon as the calibration is
accepted by the monitor the message display will return to
CAL xxx

6. Disconnect the high cal gas and connect the low cal gas to
the inlet and flow the gas at 50 to 250 ml/min.

7. Press the FLOW key to read flow. Adjust gas flow if needed.
8. Press the CAL key to display CAL xxx where xxx is the low
calibration set point. Ensure that the low cal set point
matches the calibration gas oxygen concentration; adjust the
set point if necessary.
9. The upper oxygen display will show the oxygen
measurement for the low cal gas.
10. Allow the reading to stabilize then press the SET key. An
automatic calibration will be initiated. The message display
will briefly show LOW CAL. As soon as the calibration is
accepted by the monitor the message display will return to
CAL xxx. Press the O2 key to restore the oxygen
measurement display.
