to “act out” or “draw” the words written on a piece of
paper that will be given by the teacher.

1. CHOREOGRAPHY
 Choreography- is the art or practice of designing
sequences of movements of physical bodies (or their
depictions) in which motion, form, or both are
specified. Choreography may also refer to the design itself.
 Itis the art of creating and arranging dances. It was derived
from the Greek word “choreia” for “dance” and graphien
for “write.”
 A choreographer - is the one who creates or composes
the sequences of steps and moves for a performance
of dance
THREE BIG NAMES IN PHILIPPINE DANCE:
 1. ALICE REYES – A multi-talented dancer, choreographer,
artistic director who was known as the “The Mother of
Contemporary Dance.”
 - she established the Alice Reyes Modern Dance
Company with dancers from the Bayanihan Dance Company., U.E.
Dance Troupe.
 - she also initiated the professionalism of dance
arts in the country and she was also proclaimed as National Artist
for Dance in 2010.
 2. LISA TERESITA P. MACUJA-ELIZALDE- she was recognized in
1984 in Europe and became a Prima Ballerina of Kirov Ballet .
She was also the founder of Ballet Manila.
 3. DOUGLAS NIERRAS – is the most prominent name in Jazz. He has
more than two decades of involvement in dance through choreography,
pedagogy, and production.
 He was famous for his “Metanoia,” in which he collaborated with
musician Ryan Cayabyab to create a 34-minute ballet set to the five
general parts of Latin Mass.

 CONTEMPORARY DANCING STYLES


 A. Disco Dancing – Is a dance style popularized during the 1970s. It is
usually associated with John Travolta’s dance style in the movie
“Saturday Night Fever.”
 B. Hiphop – originated in America, refers to street dance styles
performed to hiphop music. It includes dance style such as breaking,
locking and popping.

 BASIC ELEMENTS OF CHOREOGRAPHY

 1.) SHAPES – the lines the dancer’s body forms


 straight curved
 angular twisted
 symmetrical asymmetrical
 on-balance off-balance

 2.) ACTIONS/MOVEMENTS – the locomotor and non locomotor
 motions of the dancer’s body
 Examples:
 step walk run hop jump leap twist turn bend
 crawl roll slither pull push gestures stretch swing shake
 rise fall

 TIME -
o Rhythm – beat even uneven syncopated accented
 o Tempo – speed fast/sudden slow/sustained accelerating decelerating
 o Unison/Canon – moving together or asynchronously

 SPACE
 o Placement – where the dancer’s body is on-stage; the horizontal space the
dancer’s body occupies
 Ex. stage left, center stage, stage right

 o Formation – where the dancer’s body is in relation to other dancers; the
space that groups of dancers occupy
 lines (straight, diagonal, curved, circular)
 blocks (square, rectangle)

2. MUSICAL INSTRUMENT
A Musical Instrument -is an instrument created
or adapted to make musical sounds. In
principle, any object that produces sound can
be a musical instrument—it is through purpose
that the object becomes a musical instrument.
 MUSIC - This is the art of combining and
regulating sounds of varying pitch to produce
compositions expressing various ideas and
emotions.
 ELEMENTS OF MUSIC:

 1. Melody- A sequence of single note; is produced through to


the succession of single tones that hang together to produce the
musical sound.
 2. Rhythm – refers to the placement of the duration of notes
and rests in time, creating a pattern.
 3. Harmony – refers to the simultaneous sounding of tones,
chords, and vertical movement; It is the succession of chords.
Chords are two or more notes played together at the same
time.
 4. Timbre - The quality of a sound, or the ‘colour’ of a sound
and often refers to different instruments. However it also
goes deeper, covering all the different sounds one instrument
can create.
 5. Form - Order of events in a piece of
music. The term may define the number of
sections, and their relationship to each
other and to the whole.
 6. Dynamics - are the changes in volume.
Changes can be immediate or gradual of
time.
 7. Texture - It refers to whether a piece of
music is conceived more in terms o melodic
lines or in a sense of simultaneous sounds or
chords. It describes the relationship of lines,
known as ‘voices’, within a piece.
Contemporary Filipino Music Composers
 1.) GEORGE M. CANSECO – was a nationally acclaimed composer
who has written songs that brought many Filipino singers fame:
Freddie Aguilar, Sharon Cuneta and Basil Valdez and his songs
were also recorded by Regine Velasquez, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Pilita
Corrals, etc.
 - He was elected President of the Filipino
Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
 Ex. Dito ba?, Ako ay Pilipino, Hiram, Ikaw etc.
 2.) RAYMUNDO CIPRIANO PUJANTE “RYAN” CAYABYAB - has
composed music for full-length ballets, theater musicals,
choral pieces, orchestral pieces, commercial recordings of
popular music, film scores and television specials.
 Ex. Maalala Mo kaya, Limang Dipang Langit, Hindi kit Malimot,
etc.
 3.) FRANCISCO FELICIANO – produced more than 30 major
works that include operas and music dramas including “La
Loba Negra”, “Ashen Wings”, “Sikhay sa Kabila ng Paalam”.

FAMOUS CONTEMPORARY MUSIC SINGERS:
 Pinoy rock-pop and Original Pilipino Music (OPM) flourished in the 1970s and to this date,
are the most popular music forms in the Philippines.

 1. FREDDIE AGUILAR - His debut album “Anak” has achieved


incomparable success, so popular, it was translated to many
languages in Asia and Europe and sang by different singers
worldwide.
 2. APO HIKING SOCIETY – is composed of three Ateneo de Manila
graduates: Boboy Garovillo, Jim Paredes and Danny Javier.
 Ex. American Junk, Paano, etc.
 3. EDGARDO JOSE MARTIN SANTIAGO “Gary” Valenciano – is
known for his energetic dance moves, forceful voice and religious
songs.
3. LITERARY COMPOSITION
 The art of combining spoken and written words and their
meanings into forms which have artistic and emotional
appeal is called LITERATURE.
 1. DRAMA - It is a literary composition that tells a story,
usually representing human conflict by means of dialogue
and action to be performed upon the stage.
 2. ESSAY – this is non fiction expository (descriptive or
explanatory) writing ranging from informal, personal topics
to closely reasoned critical treatments of important
subjects. It comes from the French word “Essai” means
“trial” or “test.”
 3. PROSE FICTION – includes narratives created by
authors. The word “fiction” comes from a Latin word
which means “to form” or “to invent.”
 4. POETRY - a form of literature that adheres to a
certain forms and patterns such as rhythm, meter, etc. ;
it is written in verse.
 5. MISCELLANEOUS – history, biography, letters, journals,
diaries and other works.
4. THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE
 It is the enactment of drama in theatre, performed
by actors on a stage before an audience, presupposes
collaborative modes of production and a collective
form of reception.
 1. Tragedy – it presents human suffering.
 2. Melodrama – emphasis on action rather than on
character. The action is sensational or romantic and
usually has a happy ending.
 3. Comedy – generally includes all plays with happy
ending.
5. VISUAL DESIGN/ART
- It is another group of art genres that is seen by
the eyes and perceived by the mind.
- Unmoving as well as moving images, appeal to
visual perception.
- It involves not only painting and sculpture but
include such things as clothes, household
appliances, and the furnishings of our homes,
schools, churches and other buildings.
- Visual arts include much more than painting,
sculpture and architecture.
- Classification of Visual Arts:
- A. GRAPHIC ARTS (flat, or two-dimensional surface) –
covers any form of visual artistic representation, esp.
Painting, drawing, photography and the like or in which
portrayals of forms and symbols are recorded on a two-
dimensional surface.
- Example:
- 1. Painting – the process of applying pigment to a surface to
secure effects involving forms and color.
- 2. Drawing – the art of representing something by lines made
on a surface or the process of portraying an object, scene or
forms through lines, shading and textures in one or more
colors.
 3. Graphic Processes – are processes for making multi-reproduction
of graphic work.
 Example:
 Relief printing, engraving, silkscreen (surface painting), etc.
 4. Mechanical Processes – developed by commercial printers.
 5. Photography – a chemical-mechanical process by which images
are produced on sensitized surfaces by action of light.

 B. PLASTIC ARTS (three-dimensional) - all fields of the visual


arts in which materials are organized into three-dimensional forms.
 1. Architecture – is the art of designing and constructing buildings
and other types of structures.
 2. Landscape – is planning outdoor areas for human use and
enjoyment such as gardens, parks, playgrounds, golf course.
 3. City Planning – planning and arranging the physical aspects of a
large or small community.
 4. Interior Design- is to designate design and arrangement of
architectural interiors for convenience and beauty.
 5. Sculpture – refers to the design and construction of three
dimensional forms representing natural objects.
 6. Crafts – designing and making of objects by hand for use or for
pleasure.
 7. Industrial Design – refers to design of objects for machine
production.
 8. Dress and Costume Design – this covers the design of wearing
apparel of all types.
 9. Theater Design – is the design of settings for dramatic
production.

THREE MAIN TYPES OF TECHNIQUES:
 1. REPRESENTATIONAL ART – shows actual objects or subjects
from nature or reality. They may look exactly like thee object
copied naturally or realistically or can be stylized for as long as
the essential parts are present in the artwork.
 Example: Joey Labrador’s “Tatlong Persona”
 2. ABSTRACT ART – takes subjects from reality and nature but
the artists present them in ways different from the way they are
seen in everyday life.
 Example: Cagayan de Oro artist Oscar Florendo’s “He Said, She
Said” (colored abaca on marine plywood to form colorful figure.
 3.NON-OBJECTIVE ART – also uses the elements of art and
principles of design but the artworks do not represent or
depicts person, place or thing in the natural world.
 Example: NCR Artist Edwin Coscolluela’s “Image 055” – is
a series of forms and colors that show the contrast
between black and white.
A. INSTALLATION ART: NEW MEDIA ART
 INSTALLATION ART: NEW MEDIA ART – consists of three-
dimensional works that are often site-specific and designed to
transform interior or exterior spaces to achieve an effect.
 it is composed of several genre such as painting, sculpture
and mediums, like ready-mades, found objects, drawing, text,
objects assembled together to interact with space or art
objects formed creatively by the artist.

 Example: “Model Units 1 and 2” by Jose John Santos.



 Plet Bolipata’s “Beetles” are made from bathtubs, crocheted
lace, steel, and decorative items sealed with resin.
 It does not consider sale nor profit: they are temporary and most
of the time, cannot be stored.
 Different types of Installation Art:
 1. Technology-aided – installation art consists of an installation
art piece on which light, video or film is projected.
 2. Performance-installation art – combined with theatre and
dance. Lights and sound are part of the design and performance
is made under a specific span of time.
 3. Conceptual installation art – places emphasis on an idea or
concept rather than in a tangible art object.
 4. Interactive installation art – allows the viewer to touch,
walk in or through, listen or interact with the installation
piece.

 5. Environmental installation - encompasses ecological
concerns and is a celebration of an artist’s connection with
the beauty of nature, the natural world and environment.

B. PUBLIC ART: ART IN OUTDOOR SPACE
PUBLIC ART: ART IN OUTDOOR SPACE - It requires
collaborative work and engages the services of different types of
people such as artists, architects, engineers, plumber, civic
leaders, community residents, design professionals, funding
agencies and construction teams.

 TYPES OF PUBLIC ART:


 1. Community-based art – refers to artistic activity based in
community setting.
 2. Municipal art – is typically located in squares, plaza, or infront
of government buildings, law courts, airports, public museums or
academic institutions.
 3. Land art – includes monumental earthworks that interact with
nature and the environment.

 4. Architectural art – decorates the facade, orchard or
enclosed concrete structures where large number of people
converge.
 5. Commemorative monuments – are sculptures, whether
individual or group of people who are honored for heroism in
historic events.
 6. Design-based public art – is decorative and is usually
located in parks or commercial centers.
 7. Campaign-inspired public art – public art that promotes
an idea by making visible reminders to the public.

C. MIXED MEDIA ART: COMBINING ART FORMS
 MIXED MEDIA ART – refers to an artwork that is made from
combination of mediums or materials. It can be a combination of
photograph and painting, or stones embedded on wood.
 - It can be used to express political views, social
statements or a reaction to an issue.

 Techniques used in Mixed Media:


 1. COLLAGE – is an artistic composition of materials and objects
pasted over a flat surface and is usually hung on the wall.
 2. ASSEMBLAGE – it is putting together objects and combining them
in new contexts. It employs any method of joining or fastening to
make a three-dimension object.

D. PHOTOGRAPHY & DIGITAL ART:
TECHNOLOGY-AIDED ART
 PHOTOGRAPHY AND DIGITAL ART – are the most accessible and
manipulated art form used by billions of people around the globe.
With the invention of mobile devices with camera, it can now fit into
anyone’s pocket so that it is now the most convenient image-taking
gadget.

 Different Types of Contemporary Photography:


 1. Nature Photography – enables us to view landscapes, places and
objects that we may never encounter in our lifetime.
 2. Photography and Reality - a photography that shows present
reality in its true form.
 3. Photographic Alteration - can also offer an illusion and
this challenges the standpoint of fidelity of appearance.
 4. Mobile Photography - is taking pictures using a mobile
phone.
 5. Photojournalism - this type of photo is used in
journalism.

 DIGITAL ART - is an art form that uses digital technology as an
essential part of the creative or presentation process.

 A. Electronic-aided Digital Art – a collaboration of artists with


the intervention of technology.
 B. Non-figurative Digital Art - contemporary artists disregard
figures and any semblance to nature, naturalism and realism.
They use geometric shapes, lines and spaces.
 C. Fantasy Digital Art - it creates worlds, universe, imaginary
creatures and combine colors that transports the viewers to
another world that seem boundless.
 D. Digital Art as Design - an art design used in urban places
such as commercial places, recreation, airline and shipping
industry, etc.
