How

education and awareness

brought changes in
caste system?
WHAT IS CASTE SYSTEM ?
Caste system is an ancient
factor of Hindu religion
and culture, which
historically separated
communities into
thousands of endogamous
inherent
groups of jatis and
the jatis were further
divided into
four varnas named as
Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vais
hyas, Sudras. 2

PROBLEMS OF CASTE SYSTEM
1. Social Problem: These problems pertained to the concept of purity and pollution.
The untouchables were given a very low position in the society.
2. Religious Problems:
These pertained to the denial of the right of entering temples which were exclusively
served by the high-caste Brahmins. The untouchables were neither allowed to enter
the temples nor served by the Brahmins.
3. Economic Problems:
They suffered from many economic problems. They had to face many economic
hardships and they were not given proper reward for their service.
4. Educational Problems:
Traditionally the untouchables were deprived of getting education. They were
not allowed to use public educational institutions.
5. Public Disabilities:
Harijans had to face many public indignities because they were denied the right
to use the services of public utilities like wells, public transport as well as
educational institutions.

As many as 1,24,144 students who secured
admission to Class I to XII in schools during the 2017-18
academic year in the State have left the caste and religion
columns blank.
Xavier School
 Xavier school's first batch of students
enrolled were all child labourers.
 The first priority when enrolling
children, goes to the 'poorest of
the poor’ i.e the untouchables
who has been set back in the
society because of the caste
system .
 The school receives no financial aid
from the Government, so all running
costs are paid for by charitable
institutions such as Supporting Dalit
Children.

excellent job..
 The school motto is the same as
Xavier School in Manvi -
'Reaching the
Unreached' - its purpose
to reach out to Dalit and
other impoverished children
living in the nearby backward
and remote villages.
