Three of the most prominent criteria for the evaluation of social research are
reliability, replication, and validity.
RELIABILITY : whether the measures that are devised for concepts in the social
sciences (such as poverty, racial prejudice, deskilling, religious orthodoxy) are
consistent.
REPLICATION: The repeatability of similar results when identical research is
conducted at different times or in different organizational settings
VALIDITY: Evidence that the instrument, technique, or process used to measure a
concept does indeed measure the intended concept.
Validity
Validity is concerned with the integrity of the conclusions that are generated from
a piece of research
A. Measurement validity:
• often referred to as construct validity.
• Essentially, it is to do with the question of whether a measure that is devised of
a concept really does reflect the concept that it is supposed to be denoting.
• Two types of longitudinal design: the panel study and the cohort study.
• Panel: a sample, often a randomly selected national one, is the focus of
data collection on at least two (and often more) occasions. Data may be
collected from different types of case within a panel study framework:
people, households, organizations, schools, and so on. An illustration of
this kind of study is the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS).
