Goal of Survey:
● Gain insight of the student perception of homework.
● Create conversation of the intended result of
homework.
The Process
● What questions are to be asked on the survey?
● Who is willing to participate in the survey?
● Analyze Results
● Based on the results, what are the next steps?

How much effort do students put into
homework?
How much effort do students put into
homework? (1/2)
● Absolutely the bare minimum
● It is kind of hard to put full effort into homework considering it is
every night.
● if question is difficult, lots of effort. if question is easy, no effort
● The answers are online
● I just get it done not really knowing what I am doing
How much effort do students put into
homework?(3)
● I don’t put very much effort.
● I put in average effort because I know if the answer is wrong there
isn’t to much of a consequence.
● When I don’t understand it which is a lot of the time I don’t put in that
much effort. When I do understand it it’s easy.
● I put in different effort depending on the material, because I find
some material to be hard so I’ll work on it more.
● I usually know the material so it doesn’t take a lot of concentration.
● I know that the homework will be on a test so I will go over it with
piers near test time
● I put a decent amount of effort into my homework. Sometimes I am
not able to get a problem so I ask the teacher the next day.
How much effort do students put into
homework?(4/5)
● the more relearning i have to do the more effort
● I read every question thoroughly and if I don't understand a question or
what to do, I look up youtube videos on the concept to help me better
understand.
● I actually take time to learn the steps on the homework so I can
understand it better.
● I put in a lot of effort. I work on my hw with my tutor that I have for math.
It takes up a lot of my time and I don’t have that much time for anything
else.
● Aside from finding other resources to actually help me learn the material,
I would say my effort for writing down problems, showing all my steps,
and thoroughly checking my answers is high above the average

Are students motivated to do
homework?
What motivation do you need to do your
homework consistently and
thoroughly?
What motivation do you need to do your
homework consistently and thoroughly?(1)
● To actually see improvement. The only time I see improvement
is when I meet with my tutor and she has to re go over what
**** taught because **** moved too quickly
● Typically I put it off as my last assignment for the night
● Maybe if homework counted more, I would be more motivated
● It’s difficult, time consuming, and intimidating so I often avoid it
● Nothing
● The motivation of knowing the material so I don’t loath doing
my hw.
What motivation do you need to do your
homework consistently and thoroughly?(2/3)

● None I enjoy doing it.

● I like getting grades for my homework to motivate me
● The fact that if I don’t do the homework I will fail the test
● I don’t need motivation it’s homework so I’m never going to want to
do it but I do it because I know it will help me and it’s worth points
● Part of the reason I’m not strongly motivated is because I have
many other assignments to do along with these ones.
● Thorough and helpful lectures during classtime, or letting us use
Khan academy to teach ourselves (during the class period), would
be excellent motivation for the completion of my homework and
other academic assignments.
What motivation do you need to do your
homework consistently and thoroughly?(4/5)
● I am motivated to do it just because if I don’t I’ll get a bad
grade.
● If I get a bad grade, I will have a harder chance of getting into
the college and career I want.
● free time to do it.
● I mostly know I have to do it and it helps me further understand
the math we’re learning.
● Our homework prepares us for daily quizzes, so I am always
motivated.
● Understanding for the test. Not necessarily for points, I do it so
I don’t have to cram the day before the test.

Is Homework Valuable?

Talk to a partner. How

would your students
answer this question?
Do students think homework is
valuable?
Where do you think the majority of students rated
themselves?
Strongly Disagree Strongly Agree

1 2 3 4 5
Do students think homework is
valuable?
What is the value of homework? (1/2)
● Not that high because I mostly understand things more during
class because I can ask questions. I try to look up my
questions online but it doesn’t give explanations as well as in
person.
● I personally don’t think homework helps me, paying attention in
class is all I need to understand the topics, homework is just
busy work for me.
● learning how to do the problems. no point in doing homework if
you already know how to do the problem
● The grade
● No it isn’t I doesn’t help much and it isn’t worth much
What is the value of homework? (3)
● Homework helps you practice/learn
● Sometimes homework can help you better understand the content you
learned in class.
● Sometimes the homework is valuable to me if we are practicing new
concepts, but sometimes the homework will be repetitive and we have not
gone over the concepts in a while.
● Sometimes it can help when I need to further understand the material, but
when I already understand it there is little use
● I mean yes you are reviewing the material but we do that anyways in class
and when we do do homework we turn it in the next day and don’t review
the problems that challenged us!
● A lot of it feels like a waste of time and/or busy work. For many students,
learning math requires direct instruction from an educator
● Good grades
What is the value of homework? (4/5)
● I think, in math, homework helps. However, going through the homework
problems and closely working with the materials really brings out the
benefits of homework — not just doing stuff we haven’t learned.
● It helps me practice what we learned in class but when I don’t
understand what we did in class homework is hard for me
● It is good practice out of the classroom to help me solidify what I learned
in class.
● It’s valuable most of the time since it helps me understand the material
better, although I get help with it.
● I understand that homework expands concepts learned in class and this
is valuable to my knowledge.
What is the value of homework? (4/5)

● It prepares me to do well on the in class quizzes and keeps my grade

up
● When you are consistently doing the homework I feel a lot more
prepared for the test and I end up doing better.
● It’s only valued if it has points
● So I don’t fail
● It is important because it is graded. That is all. Most of my studying
comes from the study guide
● For me homework is the only way I can pass a class. I really struggle
taking test and I have a tutor but I still seem to fail. Homework is what
is keeping from failing this course
