What are text types?
written for a variety of purposes, using different forms and standards of
Composition/ language style

•A text is a piece of writing that you read or create.

Two main text types:


•Factual text types =factual description, recount, or persuasive
•Literary text types =poetry, narrative or personal response.
Three Main Categories:
most commonly used classification text materials is that one
based on text’s purpose and meaning

1. Expository texts
2. Narrative texts, and
3. Argumentative
(It aims to change the readers’ beliefs.)

Expository text

Expository structures can be classified into five categories:
•Description: where the author describes a topics characteristics, features,
attributes, etc. and gives examples.
•procedure or sequence: the author lists different activities in their
chronological order or enumerate items in a numerical order.
•comparison
•cause-effect explanation
•problem-solution presentation
In the expository category, the non-fictional texts have specific role to
inform or to teach the readers. They can come in a various formats,
depending of the area of use:

•business: reports, letters, executive summaries.


•journalism: essays, news reports, press releases, sports news.
•technical communication: user guides, technical reports or standards.
•academic and scientific communication: textbooks, student guides, scientific
reports, scientific journals’ articles, encyclopedia articles.
•general reference works: encyclopedia articles, or on-line, multi-domain
informative texts, as the Wikipedia articles.

My Last Vacation
My last vacation was very fun. First I went to the beach with my
cousins. We surfed and swam in the ocean. Then went to my grandparents
farm and rode a horse. Next we climb a big mountain. Finally we came back
home and rest . I had the best vacation ever.

_______1. How do we breathe?


The nose, trachea and lungs are the main organs which make up the
respiratory system. This system allows the exchange of gases which are need
ed for us to live.
Breathing happens when the brain sends a message through the nerves to the
intercostal muscles which lie between the ribs and diaphragm. When the
instruction is received, the muscles pull the ribs outwards and the diaphragm
relaxes so that the space in the chest gets bigger. Because the pressure in the
chest gets lower, air rushes in to fill the lungs…

When I was five years old, I took an extreme liking to my sister's toys. It
made little difference that I had a trunk overflowing with dolls and toys of my own.
Her "big girl" treasures were much easier to break, and much more appealing. Like-
wise, when I was ten and she was twelve, the earrings and make-up that she was
slowly permitted to experiment with held my attention, while my former obsession
with catching bugs seemed to be a distant and fading memory.

Speech production is made possible by the specialized movements of our vocal
organs that generate speech sounds waves. Like all sound production, speech production
requires a source of energy. The source of energy for speech production is the steady stream of
air that comes from the lungs as we exhale. When we breathe normally, the air stream is
inaudible. To become audible, the air stream must vibrate rapidly. The vocal cords cause the air
stream to vibrate. As we talk, the vocal cords open and close rapidly, chopping up the steady air
stream into a series of puffs. These puffs are heard as a buzz. But this buzz is still not speech…
