Social Unrest
Race Riots: In 1919, there were several riots
that were known as the Race Riots. These
riots mainly occurred as a result of racial
injustice and conflicts with racial violence
that the white Americans partook in.

Chicago Race Riot (1919) was a clear


example of a riot that resulted in 38 deaths
and over 500 of the injured.

These riots are also known as the “Red Summer”.

Some other cities that experienced Race


Riots were Knoxville, Tennessee, Longview
Texas and Omaha, Nebraska.

The Red Scare was the Mitchell Palmer was the


term that used to refer to United States Attorney

Several inventions were created in the 1920s.
Some of which were the Hair Dryer, Q - Tip and
the Band aid. Along with an increase in products,
there was a change in Mass advertising due to an
increase in celebrity influence.

Henry Ford, the inventor of the T- model, also


created the assembly line. Which was used in the
creation of cars.The car changed American society
because it allowed people travel further from
cities, new jobs regarding the production and
maintenance of cars appeared and many homes
were remodeled in order to accommodate for
the new automobiles.
Prosperity

The credit card allowed many


users to possess certain items
( for instances a car ) and pay
for the item some other time.
Many Americans were excited
by the new idea.

During such a seemingly profitable time, most Farmers and


African Americans did not experience economic
prosperity.

The act that limited immigration to 2% of the
ethnicities in the U.S population was the
Immigration Act of 1924.

Three ways that the lives of


women changed in the 1920s
was through having a bigger
variety of jobs to work in,
women were able to vote in all
states and were able to
consume alcohol with men.

The 18th Amendment dealt with prohibition along
with the production and distribution of alcohol which
had been enforced by the Bureau of Prohibition.

Bootlegging was the illegal


production and distribution of
alcohol.

Although laws were emplaced to


hinder alcohol consumption, illegal
bars called Speakeasies existed.

Modernists referred to people


who believed that the bible
should be the main source to
follow concerning morality.

In the Scopes Trial, the defendant,


John Thomas Scopes, was accused
and convicted of teaching evolution. He
was accused of violating the Butler Act,
which made it illegal for evolution to be
taught in schools.
African Americans in the 1920s
The NAACP focused on the
economic sustainability, Education,
Health, Public Safety and Voting
rights of African Americans.

One of Marcus Garvey ’s, the founder


of the United States Negro
improvement association, goals were to
promote black empowerment.

In 1916 - 1970 many African Americans moved
from the rural South to the more urban Northwest,
Midwest and West. Many moved in search of new
jobs and the massive migration was called The
Great Migration.

Over 6 million African Americans


relocated.

Langston Hughes, Zora Neale
Hurston, Claude McKay and
Jessie Redmon Fauset.

Popular jazz performers were


Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll
Morton and Billy Holiday.
