What is

Autism?

Definition:
“Autism is a developmental disorder of
variable severity that is characterized by
difficulty in social interaction and
communication and by restricted or repetitive
patterns of thought and behavior.”
How do you know if
individuals have
Autism?
Neurological tests can be
run to evaluate whether or
not individuals have
Autism. Children can also
be screened for Autism by a
medical professional at a
very young age.
How many
individuals have
Autism?
1 in 59 children have
Autism
Symptoms of Autism:
1. Many individuals with Autism do not make eye contact.
2. They do not enjoy physical touch.
3. Many people with Autism prefer isolation.
4. Some individuals are nonverbal.
5. Many individuals with Autism flap their hands in front
of their faces.
6. A lot of people with Autism fixate on certain objects
such as lights.
Treatment Options:
There is no real cure for Autism, however, there are many
different kind of therapies for autistic people that have
been proven to be beneficial. Therapies such as ABA,
physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational
therapy can be very helpful for some individuals.
Three Facts about
Autism:
1. The representative color of Autism is
blue.
2. The symbol for Autism is the puzzle
piece.
3. April 2nd is known as “light It up blue”
day around the world. The seven
wonders of the world are lit up blue for
Autism Awareness. The white house is
even projected with blue light on this
day.
Three Effective Teaching Strategies:
1. One effective teaching strategy would be to place
autistic students away from loud children, away from
windows, and doors.
2. Another effective strategy would be to bring Autism
awareness to your classroom. Make sure children with
disabilities in your classroom feel celebrated, light it up
blue everyday in your classroom.
3. Another strategy includes printing out a schedule of
how the student’s day will go, therefore, there are no
surprises.
