Fundamental of Start Inhibit function
• This function “Thermal Capacity used(TCU)/ Start Inhibit“ will limit starts when the motor is already
Hot
• Upon the start, the inrush current (motor starting current) is about the motor’s full load current
causing the thermal capacity used within the motor to rise rapidly
• The motor relay SR469 learns the amount of thermal capacity used at start
• If the motor is hot, thus having some thermal capacity used, the relay will not allow a start if the
available thermal capacity is less than the required thermal capacity for a start
• This is to ensure that there is enough thermal capacity within the motor for successful start before a
start is attempted
TCU / Start Inhibit Example
To ease for explanation, let this water tank to determine as a motor total Thermal Capacity Used to heat up the motor
For the last 5 starts, the relay will use the highest Thermal Capacity Used, which is 27%
TCU / Start Inhibit Example
66.25%
Available Thermal Capacity 20% remaining which is not enough to start the
motor. Starting this motor required 33.75% as calculated by the relay. Thus
allow motor to start one time only if the Thermal Capacity Used has cooled
80% - 66.25% = 13.75% down by 13.75%
Starts/Hr Function
• Jogging Block Function is another feature that to prevent operators from jogging the motor
(multiple starts and stops performed in rapid succession). It consists of two distinct elements
that can be set in the relay. Starts/Hour and Time Between Starts
• Starts/Hour setting allows operator to start the motor in hour e.g. Starts/Hour = 2 means
allow only 2 start in one hour. 3rd start will be block
• Time Between Starts setting will not allow operator to do 2nd start within the set time e.g.
Time Between Starts = 20 min means the motor will block for 20 min after the motor started.
If the motor 1st start is not successfully, the 2nd start will only allow after 20 min passed

In the previous example, motor tripped and Thermal Thermal Model Cooling Motor tripped
Capacity Used reached 80%. Time that required to have
another start is calculated as follow;
0.6665−0
𝑡 = 240 × −𝐼𝑛 = 43.82 minutes
0.8000−0
Time = ? 240 min
Thus, it is required to wait 43.82 minutes to allow us to start Time in Minutes
