Old trends of fashion in India
• India is a country with an ancient clothing design
tradition.

• The history of clothing in India dates back to ancient

times, yet fashion is a new industry, as it was
the traditional Indian clothing with regional
variations.

• Sari, ghagra choli or dhoti, remained popular until

the early decades of post-independence India.
4
• A famous Indian fashion trademark is Embroidery,
an art of sewing distinct thread patterns.

• A way to include the traditional look and create a

new fashion statement includes embroidery applied
to different dresses, skirts, shirts, and pants to reflect
the western culture influence as well as include
the Indian tradition.

• Embroidery became a prominent feature of Indian

wedding attire and also one of the country's biggest
fashion export.

5
• An early trendsetter in fashion was Bollywood (Hindi
cinema), where costume designers like Bhanu
Athaiya, started experimenting with film fashion in
the 1960s.

Emerging trends in fashion of India
• Emergence of fast fashion - The traditional design
process with a three-six months time frame was
designed for seasonal collections. It has now given
way to a ‘curation over creation’ strategy for monthly
collections with a shorter time frame of two months.

• Viable eco-friendly products-This trend is visible in

how progressive apparel companies are addressing
the latent consumer demand for environment-
friendly clothes.
13
• Biker Denims – Denims that offer excellent full-
length abrasion resistance and feature integrated
armor pockets at both the knees and hips, unlike
normal commuter denim.

• Ably Apparel – An eco-friendly brand which

introduced apparel made up of 100% cotton
activated with filium a technology that makes natural
fabrics repel liquids, stains and odours.

14
• Return of Custom-Fit Clothing- The Menswear
market in India transitioned from tailor-made to
ready-made clothing due to the popularity of ready-
made clothing among young and working Indian
men.

• The premium brands like Van Heusen’s MY FIT and

Creyate by Arvind group have also introduced
Bespoke tailoring in an attempt to capture the
growing trend of custom-fit clothing among Indian
men.
