INTRODUCTION
FOUNDED IN: Hunnarshala lies in the collaborations and associations that were built after
2001 earthquake in Kutch with / built in 2003
FOUNDERS: nilkanth chhaya (architect), sandip virmani (Managing Director, Hunnarshala),
kiran vaghela (managing directors) , kirit Dave (designer)
LOCATION : Bhuj, Gujarat
SITE AREA: 2150sq.mt (hunnarshala) + 1090sq.mt (karigarshala) / 3240sq.m
BUILT UP AREA: 845sq.mt
•Foundation recognize that the bhunga, a traditional circular home of the pastorals of banni had better earthquake engineering design.
•This form was introduced by the ancestors of meghwals -the building communities of the pastorals-post the great earth quake of 1819;and
the engineers explained that circular walls withstand the lateral thrusts of an earthquake as they work as arches, becoming stronger with
increasing pressure.

• In 2011, the education program was initiated with the


following objectives:
• Creating a platform for young boys and girls, school
dropouts, child labors who have discontinued their
education. either to support the family or due to lack of
proper guidance.
• To create awareness within the rural society to
encourage young students to pursue hand skills.
•The “Karigarshala” curriculum consists of theory and
practical classes.
•In 2017 -18 the total strength of students was 26 i.e.
• Initially, the artisan school was started in the office
campus of Hunnarshala and students from outside
Kutch used to stay in nearby rented houses. Though
being a temporary arrangement, it was not very
convenient for the students and also not cost-effective
to manage such a setup.

PURPOSE: TO PROPOGATE ARCHITECT LAURIE BAKER’S PHILOSOPHY OF THE
CONCEPT OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH RESEARCH, TRAINING,
DOCUMENTATION, DISSEMINATION AND NETWORKING.

• USE OF APPROPRIAT MATERIAL FOR BUILDINGS,
• CREATION OF SUPPORT FACILITIES SUCH AS SANITATION AND DRINKING WATER,

INTRODUCTION

FOUNDED IN: 1989


FOUNDERS: Satprem Maïni with the support of HUDCO, Government of India, in 1989.
LOCATION : Auroville, Mattur, Tamil Nadu.
LEADERS & TEAM: Under the supervision of Director Satprem and co-directors Ayyappan and Lara, the AVEI team includes on
