According to control:

• Conventional chassis
• Semi-forward chassis
• Full-forward chassis

According to layout:
• Engine at front
• Engine fitted in front but crosswise
• Engine fitted at the Centre of the chassis
• Engine fitted at the back
According to frame:
• (sub)
• (sub)
• (sub)

According to the number of wheels fitted on a vehicle:

• 4X2 drive chassis vehicle
• 4X4 drive chassis vehicle
• 6X2 drive chassis vehicle
• 6X4 drive chassis vehicle
Engine in front
-conventionally the
engines are fitted at
front & drive is given to
the “rear” wheels.

-the front engine is the

large mass engine at
the front of the car that
gives the driver
protection in the event
of a head on collision.
Advantages:
• Enough space is available for luggage behind the rear seat.
• It allows the passenger space to be comfortable and spacious.
• The weight of vehicle is well balance.
• Easier to inspect, repair and adjust the engine.

Disadvantages:
• Driver unable to see in
front of Front Tyres.

• Rear wheel may skid

because the rear of the truck is generally much lighter than the
front.
Engine is fitted in front but crosswise
-engine is fitted at front and
drive is given to the front wheel.
This front engine layout requires
very small space to fit the
engine. Design is more
complicated as compare to the
longitudinally placed engine.
-clutch, gear box and differential are
usually made as one unit, thereby
cost is reduced.
-low floor is available.
-it provides greater contact with the road, so the wheel
won’t slip.
Car that have engine in front but crosswise
• BMC
• Maruti
Engine is fitted at the Centre of the chassis
-mid-engine layout is putting the engine between two axles
of the car. It either in the front-mid engine or in the rear-
mid engine like:

Ferrari LA Ferrari
Engine is fitted at the Centre of the chassis
-engine is fitted in the center
of the chassis in order to
maintain the centre of gravity
and braking performance as
the quality in weight helps in
deceleration. These are the
car which is perfectly balance
because the weight of the
engines is carried by all 4
wheels equally.
-this arrangement provides full space of chassis floor to use.
Engine is fitted at the back
-engine is fitted behind the rear
axle, which some people call the
wrong place because it will put
the center of gravity behind the
car.
Porsche 911
Advantage:
-flat floor is available since
long propeller shafts are
eliminated.
-better adhesion on road
specially when climbing hill.
FMR TG500
Disadvantages:
-while climbing hills, proper
adhesion may affected since
the weight of vehicles is
move to the rear, thereby
reducing the weight on the
front wheel.
-as a result of grouping of the
engine with clutch, gear box
and differential, the repair
and adjustments become
difficult due to congestion at
the rear.
