Impacts of Hazards

LESSON NO. 8
Classify the following hazards according to their types: GEOLOGIC,
HYDROLOGICAL, ATMOSPHERIC, BIOLOGICAL, or MAN-MADE
1. Earthquake
2. Cyclones
3. Flashfloods
4. Thunderstorms
5. Typhoons
6. Storm Surge
7. Tsunami
8. Volcanic Eruptions
9. Forest Fires
10. Epidemics
11. Nuclear leaks
12. Motor vehicle accidents
Questions:
1. What are the hazards that you
experienced in your Barangay or Community?
2. How do these hazards affect you?
HAZARDS
- are the potentials for damage to man and his environment
- elements of the physical environment, harmful to man, and
caused by forces extraneous to him

“A phenomenon or situation, which has the potential to cause the

disruption or damage to people, their property, their services, and
their environment”
General Classification of Hazards
1. Natural Hazards – arise from purely natural processes

2. Quasi-natural hazards – are through the interaction of

natural processes and human activities
Examples – Smog and Desertification

3. Technological or Man-made or Human-induced hazards –

arise directly as a result of human activities
TYPES OF HAZARDS

1. Geologic – related to Solid Earth (rocks and soils)

2. Hydrologic – bodies of water
3. Atmospheric – relating to Earth’s Atmosphere
4. Biologic – living things or substances from living things that can cause
illnesses and diseases or any harm
5. Man-made or Human-induced – a result of human activity
 The impacts of various hazards vary in severity and vary in regard
to how long they last

 In many ways, wealth and development assist in the way people

recover from hazards

 A more economically developed country can prepare for a

predict hazards more effectively and they have more resources to
support a faster recovery
Various Impacts of Hazards:

1. Physical Impact
2. Psychological Impact
3. Socio-cultural Impact
4. Economic Impact
5. Environmental Impact
6. Biological Impact
Activity no. 10
1. Form your DRRR groups
2. Prepare a Manila Paper and Pentel Pen per group

Assigned hazard per group:

Group 1 – Signal 4 Typhoon
Group 2 – Volcanic Eruption
Group 3 – Flashfloods
Group 4 – Fire
Group 5 – Magnitude 8 Earthquake
Group 6 – Nuclear leaks and explosions
Direction:
1. Give at least 3 short- or long- term impacts per category of the assigned
hazard:
A. Physical Impact
B. Psychological Impact
C. Socio-cultural Impact
D. Economic Impact
E. Environmental Impact
F. Biological Impact

2. Each group will be given 15 to 25 minutes to prepare

3. Each group will choose 2 to 3 presenters to share your work to the whole
class
