Worldwide NACD SCM CAPL

• Kobelco’s PINS in SCM are plummeting

• Volume in vital 20-ton size class has fallen by 50%
over 5 years
• Sales in NACD are stable
• Currently introducing new “Dynamic Acera” HEX line
• Parent company, Kobe Steel, has serious financial
difficulties and is rumored to be seeking a buyer for
Kobelco

“fuzzy logic”
“One of our most impressive innovations”
fuzzy logic
a multi-valued (as opposed to binary) LOGIC. Classical
logic holds that everything can be expressed in binary
terms: 0 or 1, black or white, yes or no; in terms of
BOOLEAN ALGEBRA, everything is in one set or
another but not in both. Fuzzy logic allows for values
between 0 and 1, shades of gray, and maybe; it allows
partial membership in a set. When the approximate
reasoning of fuzzy logic is used with an EXPERT
SYSTEM, logical inferences can be drawn from
imprecise relationships. It is used, for example, to
optimize automatically the wash cycle of a washing
machine by sensing the load size, fabric mix, and
quantity of detergent. Fuzzy logic is used to control
passenger elevators, household appliances, cameras,
automobile subsystems, and SMART WEAPONS.

Comparing System Quality
A system is only as good as the quality of its components.
System Quality

• No firewall
• No number or color markings on pilot hoses
and wiring
System Quality

• In-tank hydraulic oil filter - tank must be

opened to service, exposing system to
contamination
Durability

• Thinner carbody plates

• Narrower boom foot - less area to distribute
forces
• Exposed greasing points - easily damaged
Durability

• Significantly thinner bottom plates

• Exposed swivel gear - easily damaged
System Quality

• Monitor is not adjustable

• No hydraulic temperature gauge
• English language capability only
• Manual work modes
• No hydraulic return filter clog indicator
• No engine oil or hydraulic oil level
indicator
System Quality

• Integrated seat and console - levers and

seat move together
• Consoles are not adjustable
• Only one radio mount
System Quality

• Viewing area to the right limited due to

large monitor console and boom cylinder
• Cab handle located in middle of door -
difficult to access from seat
• No recessed sheet metal
System Quality

• Automatic climate control

• Only two air vents (320C has 4 in rear + 2
in front)
System Quality

• Smaller lunch box

• Only one power source available
System Quality

• Engine not easily accessible, many trip

points on upper structure
• Fan shroud only has 180 degree coverage
- potential safety hazard
Viewing Area

• Tall engine hood obstructs operator rear

view
• Emergency exit requires using hammer to
break glass - hammer may be lost
• Lower windshield stored in front of rear
window - blocks exit in case of emergency
Viewing Area

• Transparent skylight with gas assist

mechanism
Safety

• Engine will start with lever in down

position and both implement and travel
hydraulics engaged - potential danger to
operator and crew
• Hydraulics are not active with lever in
vertical position
Safety

• Anti-skid sandpaper wears quickly

• Ineffective with grease, mud, snow or ice
• Many trip points throughout upper deck
Tool Control System
• The tool control system provides customer the flexibility
to use most of the tools available
• Once calibrated, the system allows flows and pressures
can be set from the monitor, dispensing the use of flow
meters and pressure gauges
• Up to 5 different attachments can be pre-programmed
making it easy to switch attachments
• The tool control system includes joysticks with programmable
buttons and a proportional switch
• If the flexibility of the tool control system is not required,
dedicated
hammer and thumb circuits are also available

Don’t let customers get

confused by fancy names!

Intelligent Total Control System

(ITCS)

• Flow can be set by the monitor

• Must get out of cab to select valve - requires tools
and time to complete process

Battery Compartment

320C SK210(LC)-VI
• Maintenance free batteries • Requires electrolyte level check every 50 service
• Good ground level access hours
– 12 openings = 15 minutes for maintenance
• Simple hard plastic covers are fastened
by one bolt in the center • Requires maintenance every 250 service hours
• Excellent access to the batteries • Access through storage box from track
with the covers removed • Potential damage to top
• Raised air filter provides better clearance
Fuel System

320C SK210(LC)-VI
•Priming pump raised to provide easy access •Difficult to access because priming pump is located
and operation near the bottom of the engine
•This improvement gives the 320C a substantial •Operation requires removal of access covers
advantage over all of the competition •Fuel filter requires initial replacement at 50 hours
•Fuel system injection pressure and nozzles must be
