D: decayed M: missing F: filled Describes decayed teeth which include carious teeth, recurrent caries, temporary filling
Describes missing teeth
only due to caries.
Describes filled teeth
,a tooth with a crown Criteria for scoring D A permanent tooth is scored as D if it has : * Visible cavity *explorer tip catch in a pit or fissure
: early carious lesion / white spots /stains
without catch are scored as sound Criteria for scoring M :
*permanent teeth that are missed only due to caries are
scored as M.
criteria for scoring F :
a permanent teeth restored due to caries with a permanent restoration . A tooth with multiple restorations is only scored once Principles and rules for scoring DMFT : *A tooth is considered erupted if the occlusal or incisal edge are totally exposed or can be exposed by gently reflecting the overlying gingiva. *A tooth is considered present even if the crown is completely destroyed due to caries . *Congenitally missed and supernumary teeth are not counted. *If the primary tooth is retained and the permanent tooth is erupted ,only the permanent tooth is scored. *No tooth should be counted more than once. 1. Calculation: A) DMFT of the individual : D+M+F =…..+…..+…..=……Teeth it ranges from 0-28 if the 3rd molar not erupted or 0-32 if the 3rd molar erupted B)DMFT of a group of individuals : sum of DMFT of the examined individuals number of examined individuals *DMFS index: Decayed-missing-filled tooth index. It is an index measures each tooth surface. The principles and rules for scoring are the same as DMFT index. The surface examined are : *For posterior teeth:5 surfaces are examined. *For anterior teeth :4 surfaces are examined . Total examined surfaces(ant.+post) =12 4+16 5=48+80=128 surfaces if the 4 3rd molars are erupted 20 5=100------- 148 surfaces II-caries indices for primary teeth : “deft” equivalent to DMFT the basic rules and criteria are the same as in DMFT “e” indicates the primary teeth that are indicated for extraction. because of the wide variation in time of shedding of primary teeth it is difficult to determine whether a tooth is normally exfoliated or extracted.so missing tooth due to any reason is not counted.
