BIG DATA

• First identified by Gartner analyst

Doug Laney in a report published in
2001.
• Finding value in big data isn’t only
about analyzing it. It’s an entire
discovery process that requires
insightful analysts, business users, and
executives who ask the right questions,
recognize patterns, make informed
assumptions, and predict behavior.
Hardware/ Software Requirements
• Require an infrastructure that spreads storage and compute power over many
nodes, in order to deliver near-instantaneous results to complex queries.
• The most commonly used platform for big data analytics is the open-source
Apache Hadoop, which uses the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) to
manage storage. Distributed databases, including NoSQL or Cassandra, are
also commonly associated with big data projects.
Potential Applications for Big Data in Fashion
Value Chain
• Identifying cross-selling opportunities by discovering which items are frequently purchased together.
• Recognizing the factors that make people more likely to return an item, and placing limits on returns
for customers who attempt to abuse the system.
• Enterprises can use big data to optimize the procurement channel selection, the supplier integrated
into the data system.
• Enterprise can analyze the daily production performance, its data source store sales, inventory unit
sales and unit staff sales.
• Forecast a product’s shelf-time .
• Forecast trends.
