World War I began in 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Serbian nationalist. This sparked conflict between the two countries that escalated due to the system of alliances between European powers. The major powers of Europe split into two coalitions known as the Allies and the Central Powers. The immediate cause of the war was the Austrian declaration of war on Serbia after Serbia refused Austria's demands following the assassination investigation. Over 30 countries across Europe and around the world were pulled into the war fighting on both sides in a global conflict.
