OBJECTIVE
Two Basic Vectorial Equations

෍ 𝑭𝒆𝒙𝒕 = 𝑴𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝐚𝑮
𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑹𝑩

෍ 𝑴𝒆𝒙𝒕 = 𝑰𝑮 ∝𝑮
𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒂𝒙𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒖 𝑮
First Equation
෍ 𝑭𝒆𝒙𝒕 = 𝑴𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝐚𝑮
𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑹𝑩

Vectorial summation of all External Forces

acting on the RB =
Total RB Mass * Vectorial Total Acceleration
of the RB Mass Center (G)
Second Equation
෍ 𝑴𝒆𝒙𝒕 = 𝑰𝑮 ∝𝑮
𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒂𝒙𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒖 𝑮

Vectorial summation of the Moments of all

External Forces acting on the RB about an
axis passing thru its G mass center =
Mass Moment of Inertia about that same
axis (𝑰𝑮 ) * Vectorial Angular Acceleration
about that same axis
Equations of
Motion for a Z
axis symmetrical
RB
One especial pure translation (α𝑮 =0)
Rectilinear Translation
Another especial pure translation (α𝑮 =0)
Curvilinear Translation
(it will be included on the next section)
Rectilinear Translation motion
FIRST PROCEDURE

1. Draw the free-body diagram

2. Apply the 3 equations of motion

When analyzing two non-separated RBs you need first to locate their common G point by :

3. Use, if necessary, a sort of appropriate kinematic equations

Rectilinear Translation motion
SECOND PROCEDURE (for motion along the X axis)
1. Draw the free-body and kinetic diagrams
2. Apply the 3 equations of motion

Moments calculation is about a chosen PIVOTAL point P (different from point G). SEE Kinetic Diagram
𝒓𝒊 = moment arm about point P of each external force 𝑭𝒆𝒙𝒕 𝒊 . SEE Free-Body Diagram
𝒓𝒋 = moment arm about point P of each term 𝑴𝒋 𝒂𝒙 . SEE Kinetic Diagram
𝑴𝒋 = mass of each RB involved 𝒂𝒙 = common acceleration along X axis of all RB involved
3. Use, if necessary, a sort of appropriate kinematic equations

Go back to the MATH FILE Chapter 17

Part II and be sure that you solved the
required problems. Once that you are
done, go ahead and resolve as a team,
the Fundamental Problems F17.1 thru
F17.4 that begin on page 419 of your
textbook (see next slide). Next week is
the deadline (one written submission)
SOLUTIONS’ MANUAL

Study the solutions to problems 17-31

(p 815), 17-34 (p 818) and
17-38 (p 822).
Transcribe the solutions procedure in
your notebook.
Deadline: Next week!!
