- There are some main practical
considerations for reading assessment:
 Determine what reading skills are important
for students in your program.
 Develop test specifications for each level
and follow them.
 Choose appropriate texts, check for length,
readability, and modify them.
 Do not use texts that students have
encountered before, but do choose familiar
topics.
 Restrict the number of un familiar words in the
passage to 5-10 percent.
 Develop questions in the order of the passgae,
and the space carefully for coverage.
 Make the level of the questions less difficult than
the reading passage.
 Use a variety of formats, but avoid changing
formats within one section of the exam.
 Test a range of subskills, not just what is easy to
assess.
 After adminitrtion, analyze your test and provide
constructive feedback to teachers and students.
 Assess reading in the classroom, emphasizing
reading strategies.
