P&ID’S How to locate and use

correctly
INTRODUCING P&ID’S

“If it’s not safe, don’t do it that way”

CONTEXT

 RTAY are fortunate to have a library of plant

drawings called P&ID’s (Process and Instrument
Drawings)
 P&ID’S are used in our roles as Process
Technicians in a number of ways
 P&ID’s are drawings that show our plant in a 2
dimensional view. All process lines, valves and
instrumentation are represented on these drawings
 As Process Technicians we use these drawings on
a day to day basis to help identify various plant and
equipment

P&ID’S Primary use by Process Technicians

 Used as a tool for plant familarisation.eg following

plant flows
 Used to identify isolation points in new plant and tie
ins
 As a reference for Isolation Officers, Recipients and
the Witness when using the Permit to work system
 Used to troubleshoot by identifying various streams
connecting to common discharge

INFORMATION FOUND ON A P&ID

Process & Instrument Drawings

P&IDs provide a 2D visual representation of the process and equipment.

P&IDs include:
 All the equipment used
 All the instrumentation
 Size and type of pipe
 Design conditions of the equipment

The Current P&ID for the defined area must be used when identifying
process equipment

DESCRIPTION

Process Technicians must be able to perform the following using the

P&ID’

 Locate the drawing number – e.g. 220Z(2D)10101

 Interpret symbol references - e.g.

 Locate IP reference points – e.g. IP-220-299

 Demonstrate an understanding of process flow direction

P&ID LEDGEND

Process Techs must be familiar with the legends &

symbols used to identify the equipment & process flows.

All P&IDs have certain common components

SUMMARY

 P&ID’s are an important tool used in the Refinery

 P&ID’s are a helpful tool to help Process
Technicians learn the flows throughout the refinery
 Used to underpin the Permit to Work System
 A good understanding of how to read and interpret
P&ID’s is essential .This knowledge will enable
Process Technicians to better understand their plant

ACTIVITY

Activity using 220Z(2D)10101

On the P&ID provided, mark the items listed and record the following:

 220TK10030 – The type of equipment

 220PU10030A – The type of equipment

 Line number 220SB10025K1 – The diameter of the line

 Flushing valve on suction of 220PU10030B– The IP number of the

valve

 IP-220-39 – The type of equipment & the position

 P&ID & revision number 220Z(2D)10101 C15
