INTRODUCTION
 A smart home is a home where in all man’s comfort, entertainment, and esthetic
needs are governed by technology. for example, ambience parameters like
lighting/temperature needs are made intelligent to sense the need and provide.

 It is the collection of different technology working with one another in an

integrated and combined ways. such elements of technology involves air
conditioning, access control and security gadgets, lighting control system,
entertainment system and many more.
GENERAL MOTIVATION
Smart technology has led to the connectivity of nearly everything in our daily lives.
As time progresses and technology improves, the need to various technology start
evolving, such need includes:
 issue to control once own home from remote.
 the need to provide comfort, convenience and quality of life for peoples.
 security issues of what is happening in home.
 lack of efficiency of performing household activity.
 to reduce effort and time wastage carrying household activity.
 health problem issue surrounding the home.
GOAL OF THE PAPER
 This seminar paper aims to present a systematic review of existing software,
hardware, and communications control systems for smart homes. it gives an
overview of the status of smart home technologies by discussing the main relevant
features and pointing out the strengths and weakness of technology.
OVERVIEW OF PREVIOUS
TECHNOLOGY
 ECHO IV AND THE KITCHEN COMPUTER
Although it was never commercially sold, the echo iv was the first smart home device. this clever
device sense motion in specific place, control the home’s temperature and turn appliances on and off.

 ZIGBEE
ZigBee is a radio frequency (rf) communications standard based on IEEE 802.15.4. each
electronic device such as washing machine, television, lamp in the system is a ZigBee device
managed by the coordinator.
DESCRIPTION OF SMART HOME
The description of smart home varies to the context of where it is used. There are
mainly two different ways of expression by either narrow sense or generalized sense.
 In narrow sense, a smart home is more sketched as home automation or assistive
demotic. It refers the use of computer and information technology to control
devices and features in a home-like environment such as lighting, entertainment
systems, temperature, and so on.
 Smart homes use the electronic networking technology to integrate various devices
and appliances found in almost all homes so that an entire home can be controlled
centrally or remotely as a single machine.
Cont….
 In generalized sense, smart home can be any of one “cell” that deployed with
human-machine and/or machine-machine interfaced devices, with capability of
monitoring and controlling automatically or remotely, as well as communication
capability to other similar “cells” or the system for monitoring and controlling.

 An example can be the usage of sensing system for climate monitoring: deploying
different sensors/detectors for temperature, moisture, air etc., and sending the
sensed data periodically to the server.
ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF A SMART
HOME
 SINGLE FUNCTIONING DEVICES
Which are independently operating to control each of their own functions, for
example temperature, co2, security, lighting, shielding, energy, entertainment, air
quality, soil quality, water quality… and so on. they can be various sensors, detectors,
meters, switches etc. able to be operated under remote or automatic control.
Cont….
 SMART DOORBELLS
One of the most common and security-focused components of a smart security
system are smart doorbell cameras. these incorporate a small camera in the doorbell
button. when someone rings the bell or approaches the door, depending on the
system. the doorbell sends an alert to your phone and activates the camera, letting
you see a clear picture of who’s there, no matter where you happen to be.

 SMART CAMERAS
These cameras incorporate Wi-Fi connections that allow them to be viewed and
controlled remotely using a smartphone app. many can also upload the footage to the
cloud for storage, eliminating the need for a potentially complicated on-site storage
setup.
Cont….
 SMART LOCKS
Smart locks are great not only for security but also for convenience, often allowing
you to forego keys entirely. what makes them smart is their ability to communicate
with your smartphone via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, allowing you to lock and unlock your
door from anywhere. Many also automatically lock and unlock when they detect your
phone approaching so that you can come and go without ever having to worry about
whether the door is locked.
Cont….
 SMART THERMOSTATS
The neat thing about many of these thermostats is that they learn your climate
preferences such as if you like it warmer in the morning and even what times of day
you’re home and away. the result is that they can work proactively to keep your home
at the most comfortable temperature for you without you having to lift a finger.
like other smart home features, they connect to your home Wi-Fi network and are
controlled by an associated app on your smartphone.
Cont….
 SMART LIGHTS
These are Wi-Fi enabled led lightbulbs that can be controlled from a smartphone app. you can turn the
bulbs on or off either manually or on a schedule dim the bulbs, or choose their color from a seemingly
endless array of hues. and all this can be done from anywhere. you don’t need to worry about whether
you remembered to leave a light on before heading out on vacation.
Cont….
 SMART SMOKE ALARMS
This device takes the traditional smoke alarm and brings it into the digital age, with
Wi-Fi connectivity and the ability to communicate and pinpoint exactly where a fire
is located. the really nice thing about these alarms is that they can send the alerts to
your phone so you can be aware of any issues even when you’re away from home.
Cont….
 CENTRALIZED CONTROL UNIT
Of the cell, like control panels or smart mobile devices (central hub or others with
relative control application) which can control all single functioning devices deployed
in one cell, thus an “inner” communication unit.
The control is conducted via remote (Bluetooth, infrared or other rf approaches),
mostly the wireless network (Wi-Fi) as the first prioritized choice.
Cont….
 SMART HOME HUB
A smart home hub is hardware containing software attached to it that connects
devices on a home automation network and controls communications among them.
smart home hubs, which connect either locally or to the cloud.
Cont….
 SHARED PROTOCOLS
Interacting among one device e.g. other smart home cells or commanding systems
(control centers, data processing centers etc.), through which one cell can exchange
message/data with each other and the center compatibly, thus an “inter”
communication way.
ADVANTAGE OF SMART HOME
The benefits of home automation are many. the first and often most persuasive benefit
of home automation is the convenience factor. there is just nothing like being able to
communicate with your home remotely, from wherever you are.

 SAFETY
The ability to control small appliances and lighting with your fingertips anywhere
you are will add safety in your home. you can make sure appliances are off when it’s
needed to be off and on when it’s needed to be on.
Cont….
 SECURITY
The ability to lock the door through your phone is one of the greatest benefits of home
automation. this will give you peace of mind knowing that the door is close and not
guessing.
The fact that you can be alerted each time someone enters your home also allows you to
monitor who is entering your home at all times. Smart home use three layered security
systems known as PDC (Preventive, Detective and Control).
 CONVENIENCE
the ability to control everything with your fingertips is very convenient. you never leave the
house without your wallet, keys and your smart phone. with our smart phone always with us,
we can easily monitor our home and control everything with just touch of a finger.
Cont….
 SAVES TIME
Since we are living in a very fast-paced environment, we don’t even have time to
worry about our home. with home automation, we can save time going back to our
home and make sure everything is order, like if the kids close the door from school or
turn on the lights when you get home.
 SAVE MONEY
this is the biggest advantage of home automation. with the ability to control the light,
whether dimming or turning on/off on specific time will saves homeowner a great ton
of money.
You can save money through household temperature, with proper automation in
window shades and automated thermostat.
DISADVANTAGE OF SMART HOME
 STEEP LEARNING CURVE
Learning how to operate smart home technology is not difficult if you are a tech-
savvy individual.
If your technology skills are not advanced, you will have to take time to learn how to
use the technology.
 INTERNET RELIABILITY
Since smart homes rely heavily on the strength of your internet connectivity, your
system could experience problems on days when your internet signals are weak. poor
internet strength could cause your technology to fail or stall.
Cont….
 CYBER ATTACKS
Even if its strongly secured, whatever connected to an internet can not be said it is
free of cyber-attacks.
If your smart home technology is hacked, strangers can remotely unlock your doors,
change your thermostat, turn off your lights or disable your security alarm leading
further series problems.
APPLICATION AREAS OF SMART HOME
 Peoples Residents
The main application of smart home technology is to make home of individual
comfortable, secure, healthy place to live in and facilitating remote control of once
own home. The major application of smart home is making people feel like they are
home even if they are far away from their home.
 Working Office
Making office more attractive using the integration of various technology is the big
success for both organization and workers.
CONCLUTION
 Smart home is an emerging technology that changes peoples lifestyle into more
convenience and comfortable.
 a smart home contains a connection between wireless communication, sensors,
monitoring and tracking.
 Smart homes are a huge system that includes multiple technologies and
applications that can be used to provide security and control of the home easily.
 components of smart home such as security system, air conditioning, lightening
