What is Self?

 Each individual has unique personality

that are not comparable with the
personality of others.
 Your sensitivity and aggression are not
necessarily comparable with my
sensitivity and aggression.
 Personality helps to set our objectives on
the basis of who we are and what we
want to do.
Question

How can
you Develop
Your Self?
SWOT Analysis
Idiographic approach

 Idiographic means ‘writing about

individuals’.
 Psychologists who adopt this perspective
begin with a detailed picture of one
person.
 Aiming to capture the uniqueness,
richness, and complexity of the
individual.
Assumptions in Idiographic
Approach
 First, each individual has unique traits that are not
comparable with the traits of others.

 Second, we are not just biological machines

powered by genetics. We are also socially self-
conscious. Our behavior patterns are influenced
by experience and reasonings.
 Third, we behave in accordance with
the image that we have of ourselves.
We learn about ourselves through our
interactions with others.
 Fourth, as the development of the self-
concept is a social process, it follows
that personality can change through
social experiences.
‘looking glass self’

•The American psychologist Charles

Horton Cooley introduced the
concept of the ‘looking glass self’ .
• Our mirror is the other people with
whom we interact.
•If others respond warmly and
favorably towards us, we develop a
‘positive’ self-concept.
•If others respond with criticism,
ridicule and aggression, we develop
a ‘negative’ self-image.
Self has two components

I
The unique, individual,
conscious and impulsive
aspects of the individual

Me
The norms and values of society
that the individual learns and
accepts, or ‘internalizes’.
Two Sided Self
Thematic Appreciation Test
(TAT)
 A projective test, developed by Henry
Alexander Murray.
 The TAT is one of the most frequently
used and researched tests in
psychology.
 In which participants are held to reveal
their attitudes, feelings, conflicts, and
personality characteristics in the oral or
written stories.
 They make up about a series of
ambiguous black-and-white pictures.
Nomothetic Approach

 Predict behavior is a mayor aim and

outcome of this idea.

prediction of behavior.

groups.
