BUSSINESS PROCESS

REENGINEERING

Presented by
Keshav Khandelwal and Isha Pandey
“ Business Process Reengineering is defined
by Hammer and Champhy as “the
fundamental rethinking and radical redesign
of processes such as cost, quality, service
and speed”.
Radical redesigning means BPR is
reinventing or improving.

2
Principles of business process
reengineering

In 1993, Hammer and organizational theorist James

Champy published a book to expand upon the ideas
Hammer proposed in his research paper.
The book, which was entitled “Reengineering the
Corporation: A Manifesto for Business Revolution,”
quickly became a national bestseller.
The authors suggested seven principles for
reengineering a work process and achieving a
significant level of improvement in quality, time
management, speed and profitability.

7 Principles for reengineering a work
process

▰ Organize around outcomes, not tasks.

▰ Identify all the processes in an organization and prioritize
them in order of redesign urgency.
▰ Integrate information processing work into the real work that
produces the information.
▰ Treat geographically dispersed resources as though they
were centralized.
▰ Link parallel activities in the workflow instead of just
integrating their results.
▰ Put the decision point where the work is performed and build
control into the process.
▰ Capture information once and at the source 4
Role of MIS in BPR

▰ Organizations are increasingly adopting business process

reengineering BPR initiatives to achieve multiple
performance improvements through fundamental
reengineering of work. Because of their expertise,
techniques, and style of thinking, IS experts are well
positioned to play a significant role in supporting and leading,
when appropriate, many of the activities throughout
reengineering projects.

5
▰ This role may include, but is not limited to, managing
complex large-scale BPR projects, identifying and
maintaining a technological vision in support of BPR efforts,
developing process-oriented information systems, and
managing the ongoing changes in business processes.
Implications for such a role include repositioning IS to have
business, customer, and information orientations, reinventing
its activities, and resharpening its skills to properly function in
such a new environment.

6
Limitations

▰ BPR is not simple or easy to implement. Also it may not be

appropriate for all processes for all organizations.
▰ Many organizations may not be able to invest the time and
resources required to implement a radical, clean state
approach.
▰ Significant process improvement requires the use of
information technology.
▰ Improvement within each functional areas is necessary in
addition to improvement in the firm’s cross-functional
processes.

Example

▰ Food tech in India

▰ The food tech space in India has been a topic of much
discussion over the past couple of years, owing to the influx
of capital, the rise of `me too` start ups and the high burn
rate in the sector. The term food tech is an umbrella term
that includes all internet based food businesses, ranging
from cloud kitchens to food delivery. In India, the sector took
off in the late 2000s with the introduction of restaurant
discovery platforms like Zomato. The success of Zomato
inspired several other entrepreneurs to venture into the food
tech sector, leading to the growth and expansion of the
industry. Automobiles honda2005 models

“ ▰ Helping people discover great places
around them:
Our team gathers information from every
restaurant on a regular basis to ensure our
data is fresh. Our vast community of food
lovers share their reviews and photos, so
you have all that you need to make an
informed choice.

11
“ ▰ Building amazing experience around
dining:
Starting with information for over 1 million
restaurants (and counting) globally, we're
making dining smoother and more
enjoyable with services like online
ordering and table reservations.

12
“ ▰ Enabling restaurants to create amazing
experiences:
With dedicated engagement and
management tools, we're enabling
restaurants to spend more time focusing on
food itself, which translates directly to better
dining experiences.
