DETERMINATION OF PENETRATION OF BITUMEN
INTRODUCTION:
The penetration test is an empirical test used to
measure the consistency of bitumen.
AIM OF THE PENETRATION TEST:
1. To find out the hardness or softness of
bitumen.
2. To determine the consistency of bituminous
material.
3. To determine the grade of bitumen.
APPARATUS:
1. Penetrometer.
2. Needle.
3. Water bath.
4. Stop watch.
5. Thermometer.
6. Container.
7. Heater.
8. 100gm Load.
CALCULATION:

S. N Time Initial Final Penetration Avg. Penetration

(sec) Reading reading Penetration (in mm)

01 5 105 136 31

02 5 110 142 32 30.67 3.1

03 5 120 139 29
RESULT:
The penetration of bituminous material is
30.67
CONCLUSION:
We found that our sample lies in the range of
30-40 Grade which is recommended for
warmer regions. As Bangladesh is a
comparatively warm region, this sample is
usable for road construction.
DETERMINATION OF SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF BITUMEN
INTRODUCTION:
The ratio of mass of a given volume of bitumen
to the mass of an equal volume of water, both
taken at a specified temperature. The specific
gravity of bitumen varies from 1.03 to 1.06.
AIMS OF THIS TEST:
This test is done to determine the specific
gravity of semi-solid bitumen road tars.
APPARATUS:
1. Pycnometer.
2. Glass.
3. Water bath.
4. Thermometer.
5. Weight apparatus.
CALCULATION:
Empty weight of pycnometer (A) = 37.289 gm.
Weight of pycnometer + water (B) = 97.014 gm.
Weight of pycnometer + partly filled bitumen (C) = 45.156 gm.
Weight of pycnometer + partly filled bitumen + partly filled water (D)
= 97.226 gm.

Specific gravity
(𝑪−𝑨)
=
[ 𝑩−𝑨 −(𝑫−𝑪)]

= (45.156 ˗ 37.289) / [(97.014 - 37.289) - (97.226 45.156)]

= 1.027
RESULT:
The specific gravity of our sample was 1.027.
CONCLUSION:
The expected specific gravity of bituminous
material should lie in the range of 1.03-1.06.
But our sample showed the specific gravity of
1.027 which is close enough to the desired
value.
