WHAT IS A COMMUNITY?

Communities are not built of friends, or of groups with similar styles and tastes, or
even of people who like and understand each other. They are built of people who
feel they are part of something that is bigger than themselves: a shared goal or
enterprise, like righting a wrong, or building a road, or raising children, or living
honorably, or worshipping a god.

Filipinos’ social sphere does not end with
the family, friends, school, and work.
Filipinos also contribute to and are
actively involved at the community and
even at the political level.

Values
It is imperative that no one...indulge in a merely
individualistic morality. The best way to fulfill one's
obligations of justice and love is to contribute to the
common good according to one's means and the needs of
others, and also to promote and help public and private
organizations devoted to bettering the conditions of life.

Gaudium et Spes ("The Church in the

Modern World"), Vatican II, 1965 #30
COMMUNITY AND THE
COMMON GOOD
– Every member of the community has a duty to the common good in order that
the rights of others can be satisfied and their freedoms respected.
– "Common" implies "all-inclusive": the common good cannot exclude or exempt
any section of the population.
– We are social beings called to live in community. As members of the community
we are called to promote the common good. The common good requires us to
ensure that the goods of the earth are to be enjoyed by all so that each person
can respond to God’s call, reach their full potential, and contribute to the life in
society.
CONCERNING THE ORDER
OF THE COMMUNITY
– Therefore according to the places he shall have
assigned them, or which they shall hold by
seniority, so let the brethren proceed for the
Pax, for Communion, for intoning a psalm, for
taking their place in choir.
– In the matter of addressing one another by name let
those placed above designate their juniors “Fratres,”
and juniors call those placed above them “Nonnos”
which is understood as in paternal reverence: but let
the abbot, because he is seen to represent Christ, be
called “Domnus” and “Abbas,” not as having taken it
upon himself, but for honour and love of Christ.
How does Benedict build a
community?

– To start with Benedict puts all of the

members on the same footing. Age, wealth,
professional accomplishments, social
prominence does not count. Rank in the
community is simply by when you arrived.
– The community is governed by an abbot whom
the members choose from their midst. Benedict
details the qualifications of the abbot, above all
the discretion and sensitivity required in dealing
with individuals as individuals.
–"The brothers should serve one
another”
– The framework of community comes
alive under the warmth of Benedict's
persuasion that nothing is to be
preferred to Christ's love in their midst.
Historically what did
Benedictines do in community?

– For one thing, many monastic communities

became centers of learning.
– A famous product of this schooling was the eighth-
century English monk, Bede.
– He is renowned for his major work, A History of the
English Church and People, a full length history which
remains the major source for its period

THESIS
– A community is a way of life; and that every
single thing that is to be done takes place in
a community.
ANTITHESIS
Every single person is a part a group
of friends who share the same
interests, but often feels alone.
CONCLUSION

Every single thing, whether it is about prayer,

relationships, work, takes place within the concept
of community, and that the disciple is reminded
that he or she is part of a community.
The Community in the Rule of
Benedict

–Prayer
–Relationship
–Work
Prayer
– Prayer is the center of everything.
– Opus Dei and silent personal prayer go
together and they they are both vital
for fruitful spiritual life.
Relationship
– Christ is present in each person.
– Everyone is to be loved, respected, honored,
listened to and welcomed as Christ.
– The essence of the life of a monastic is to love
Christ as you love your neighbor. That is the
importance of the Rule for all of us.

Work

– It is important to have a balanced life-style.

– Community members should have specified period for manual labor as well as
for prayerful reading.
– Moderation as the mother of all virtues.
It is not true that we are alone.
We are part of something bigger–
the community. We are always
connected with one another.
Consequently, this should give us
sense of hope, encouragement,
and support.
THANK YOU VERY
MUCH!
