 Become familiar with the rules and regulations of the
examination
 Have all relevant and approved documents and
equipment including:
 time-table
 identification
 pencils
 pens
 geometry sets
 calculators
 eraser

 Be on time for examinations


 Read, note and follow all instructions carefully
 Adhere to the instructions given by the invigilators
 Review answers using the question paper as the guide
before submitting to the invigilator

 Do not use gel ink pens


 Use only pencils on Multiple Choice answer sheets
 Do not use pencils to write responses to essay or
structured questions
 Use only pencils with soft dark leads (2B or 3B) for
Multiple Choice sheets and sketches and illustrations

 Underline key words
 Answer all compulsory questions
 Answer only the number of questions from each
section as required
 Use the number of lines provided for the response as a
guide

 Use marks allotted to guide responses, for example,
short answer versus an extended essay
 Allocate time equitably for questions. You cannot
obtain more than the maximum marks for each
question
 Do not repeat the stimulus given when responding to
short answer questions
 Do not provide information that is irrelevant to the
answers

 Identify the main topic and discussion areas
 Choose a few points/arguments about which you can
write
 Make a mini-plan which puts them in order before you
start writing
 Use jargons with correct spelling where appropriate

 Do not use informal abbreviations such as those used
in instant messaging, in responding to questions unless
it is required in the question, for example, in creative
writing
 Number responses accurately, for example, 1a or 5b
 Indicate in booklet where responses to questions are
continued (PTO, cont’d, see page 10)
 Write only in the space provided as no extra sheets will
be issued

 The specimen paper provided in the syllabus
 The glossary of examination terms provided in the
syllabus
 The manner in which questions are sub-divided. When
there is a change in requirement and focus the
numbering changes

 Stimulus material provided, for example, drawings and
descriptors
 Questions that require manual calculations and
calculators
 Graphical and pictorial presentations for example,
genetic crosses, tables and graphs

Plan responses:
list - itemise without detail
identify - name or point out specific components or
features
state – provide factual information in concise terms
outlining explanations
explain - give reasons based on recall
If you are asked to ‘explain’ and you ‘list’ you will not get full marks

Plan responses:
describe - provide factual information about it (that
is, what it looks like, what are its component parts) or
a sequence of a specific process
compare – state both differences and similarities
contrasts – compare by showing differences

If you are asked to ‘list’ and you ‘describe’ you will not get more
marks
