 The word batik came from the word
ambatik from javanese word, which
means cloth with tiny and little dots.
But the word might also come from
tritik, a Javanese word, which means
the resisting dying process, where it
has to be tied to a certain area.
 If seen from the textile patterns that
exist on stone statues on Javanese
temples – such as on Prambanan or
Borobudur temple, it is easy to
assume that batik had existed in
Indonesia since the ancient time.
Some books about the history of
kawung batik stated that back
in the ancient time when
kingdoms still exist,kawung is
only to be worn by noble family.
The power in the kawung
pattern,are the kawung pattern
(kolang-kaling) is surrounded
by 4 rounds as the reflection of
harmony, nature element and
human element. The 4 rounds
also faced the one point so
motif of kawung can also be
said as the symbol of unity.

by four ovals that contains
two dots that surround

in life.

1. Design

The outline of the pattern is blocked out onto the cloth, traditionally with
charcoal or graphite. Often designs are traced from stencils or patterns
called pola.
2. Waxing

Once the design is drawn out onto the cloth it is then ready to be waxed.
Wax is applied to the cloth over the areas of the design that the artisan
wishes to remain the original color of the cloth. Normally this is white or
cream. Artisans use the wax to retrace the pencil outline on the fabric.
3. Dyeing

After the initial wax has been applied, the fabric is ready for the first dye
bath. The waxed fabric is immersed in the dye bath of the first color. The
amount of time it is left in the bath determines the hue of the color; darker
colors require longer periods or numerous immersions. The fabric is then
put into a cold water bath to harden the wax.
