STATUS OF THE LEARNERS WITH LEARNING

DIFFICULTIES, THEIR EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS

AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF ARTACHO
NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
RATIONALE:

• Learning difficulty is incurable neurological disorder that affects the

brain’s ability to receive, process, store and respond to information. Not
surprisingly, each one learns differently. Most of us have our own
“learning difficulty”, to cope with. Some people don’t do well with
numbers, others have difficulty in writing. Some people feel they have to
discuss a new idea before they understand it; others need to mull it over
in privacy.
• There are some children who have learning difficulties but are not
addressed properly for various reasons. The vast majority of children
with learning disabilities have some emotional problem and academic
performance.
RATIONALE:

• Learning difficulties and learning problems are often the first

descriptive terms used when a child begins to have trouble in school.
• The term ‘learning difficulty’ has been applied to those children who have significantly
greater difficulty in learning than the majority of their age. They are unable to make use of
the education facilities available in schools. People with learning difficulties can have
problems with many every day learning activities.
• To refer to a child with a learning difficulty as a slow learner or as a child afflicted with
a disease is completely erroneous. This motivated the researcher to a conduct a study
among learners with specific learning difficulties, not just to learn about the
characteristics and needs but to better understand them in all aspects.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

• This study will attempt to determine the status of learners with learning difficulties and
explore the level of manifestation in their emotional problems and academic performance.
• Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions:
What is the profile of the learners with specific difficulties/disability along the following:
A. Personal
a.1 Age;
a.2 Sex;
a.3 Birth Order;
a.4 Parent Educational Attainment;
a.5 Average Family Monthly Income
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
B. Academic
b.1 Grade Level;
b.2. Grade Point Average ( GPA)
2. What is the level of manifestation of the different characteristics and behaviors of learners
the with specific learning difficulty along the following:
a. Physical;
b. Cognitive;
c. Social; and
d. Emotional
3. Is there a significant relationship between the profile and the level of manifestation of the
different characteristics and behaviors of the learners with specific learning difficulty in terms
of physical, cognitive, social and emotional?

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
• Research Design

Descriptive method of research will be used in this study for the analysis of the
data from the respondents regarding the profile of learners with learning
difficulty, their status in terms of physical, cognitive, social and emotional and
their academic performance.
According to Fox et. al. (2007), a descriptive research can be explained as a
statement of affairs as they are present with the research having no control over
variable. Furthermore, these studies may be characterized as simply the attempt
to determine, describe or identify issues. Casting light on current issues or
problems through a process of data collection that enables to describe situation
more completely than what was possible are the main aims of descriptive studies.
• Respondents of the Study
The respondents of the study are the 22 learners from among Grade 7-10 enrolled in Artacho
National High School for the school year 2018-2019 who were assessed by Developmental
Psychologist.
• Data Gathering Instrument and Validation
The instrument to be used in this study will be adopted from similar studies conducted, one
having been conducted in Pangasinan State University by Baclay (2017) and the other by Kadesjo, B.
et.al (2017).
The first part of the research instrument is the profile of the learner with learning difficulties in
terms of personal and academic. The second part is a questionnaire on the level of manifestations of
the different behavioral problems such as physical, cognitive, social and emotional. The respondents
will be checking the boxes for the level of manifestation.
The researcher formulated the instrument through consultation with experts and her thesis
adviser. To determine the validity of the instrument, the researcher sought the help of experts in the
field of research. The questionnaires were composed of questions concerning the profiles of the
respondents, their status among physical, cognitive, social and emotional aspects and their academic
performance. The responses were supplied in the questionnaire and the respondents just need to
check their responses from the choices given.
• Statistical Treatment of Data
For problem 1 focusing on the profile of the learners with learning difficulties, their status along
physical, cognitive, social and emotional and academic performance, frequency and percentage will be
used.

Problem no. 2 which deals with the status of the learners with learning difficulties along physical,
cognitive, social, and emotional will be analyzed using weighted mean. The 5-point Likert Scale will be
used as shown below:
Range Scale Description
4.21-5.00 5 Highly Manifested

3.41-4.20 4 Moderately Manifested

2.61-3.40 3 Manifested
1.81-2.60 2 Slightly Manifested

1.00-1.80 1 Not Manifested

Problem no.3 which is the significant relationship along the profile and status of the learners with
learning difficulties in terms of physical, cognitive, social and emotional will be analyzed using Pearson and
Chi-square.
