WHAT IS SOUND?

Science
Learning Objective 2
Second Term 2019
Boston International School
OBJECTIVE
To learn how the sound and the
diversity of the sound is produced.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
 Identifying how the sound travels
and its characteristics according to
vibration and intensity.
BIBLICAL PRINCIPLE: Keeping
your ears open to the voice of God
Revelation 4:12: New King
James Version (NKJV)

And I heard a sound from heaven

like the roar of rushing water and
like a loud peal of thunder. The
sound I heard was like that of
harpist playing their harps.

HOW IS THE SOUND

PRODUCED?
CLASSROOM PROJECT
Insta-lab 1 Exploring sound with a
hanger and a string
Students will explore the science of sound
with a just a wire hanger and some string.
Procedure
Tie the hook of a wire hanger to the center
of a large piece of string.
Wrap the ends of the string around your
index finger.
Now put your hands over the openings of
your ears while holding the strings.
Lean over and swing the hanger so that
it taps against a table or door. What do
you hear?
How did it sound? Does banging the
hanger against the table sound different
if you don’t put the string to your ears?
How? How do you think the sound gets
to your ears?
Insta- lab 2. Lab in class: Homemake
Kazoo
Materials for Homemade Kazoos
Cardboard tube (old toilet paper roll or
paper towel roll)
Wax paper
Rubberband
Sharp pencil (or other sharp object) to
poke holes
Paint or other art supplies to decorate
your kazoo (optional)

Cover the end of your cardboard tube

with wax paper. Secure it with a
rubberband.
Poke a hole in the side of the tube using
the sharp pencil or other sharp object. (I
used the poky end of a candy
thermometer.)

Put the open end of the
tube up to your mouth
and hum or say “do”
over and over and to
make the kazoo sound.
(This took some
practice, but we finally
got the hang of it!)

Optional: Paint your

kazoo!
Individual
Due date: May 28th, 2018
Rubric
Actively participation in all activities
Use the vocabulary in context
Pronunciation
Teamwork
Creativity
Responsibility
WHAT IS SOUND?
Sound is a pressure wave
which is created by a vibrating
object. Sound travels in
waves and make things
vibrate.
Vibration: A series of back and forth
movements.

Loudness: The amount of energy a

sound has.

Pitch: The highness or lowness of a

sound.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE
SOUND
VIBRATION: Sound waves are
created by the vibration of an object
(the wire hanger and string). When
vibrations hit your ear drum, your brain
interprets the vibrations as sound. The
sound waves can travel through air,
liquids and solids.
ACTIVITY IN CLASS
Draw three things that produce
sound.

watch a video about the intensity

of the sound.

INTENSITY:
The intensity of a sound depends
on its vibration. It could be soft
and or loud. It also depends
upon the strength, or amplitude,
of the vibrations producing the
sound.
 PRINCIPLE OF THE MONTH: INTIMACYY
 John 14:9 New King James Version (NKJV)
 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet
you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has
seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

 Song of the month: Close
